Silver soap softens skin
We’re taught to use soft cleansers, not soap, on our faces, but here’s an exception to consider: Cor Silver-Based Foaming Soap contains silver, an antibacterial agent that also is said to repair skin cells, along with silica, collagen, chitosan (a substance that is said to help even skin tone) and sericin, a protein made from silk.
We tested it, and it made skin feel silky.

Chapped lips don't have to be a rite of winter

Screen-siren red lips might be the rage in Hollywood, but, for most of us, red lips are far less glamorous: They’re a sign that they’re chapped.
Lips are susceptible to dryness — the root cause of the burning, cracking and flaking — because the skin is thin and they lack oil glands and natural moisture. Chapping can happen any time of year, although lips are particularly susceptible in the winter when there is little humidity in the air.
The best way to prevent it is to keep lips protected and moisturized all the time, says Dr. Charles Zugerman, associate professor of dermatology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “The key to keeping lips healthy and moist is simple — you have to care for them every day. A layer of lip balm applied every morning and again when it’s needed throughout the day will help form a protective layer between lips and the elements.”
Lip balm has become a big beauty category, and the choices in stores range from waxy sticks to gooey gels. The right one depends on personal preference and condition. A gel tends to be soothing and moisturizing while giving the appearance of dewiness, with little or no color, explains Chase Aston, international makeup artist for the Body Shop. Wax-based products provide more of a protective shield, and cream-based formulas tend to be thicker and heavily nourishing, he says.
The richest, creamiest options are often called “butters,” Aston says.

Appreciation for BeverlyD

Girls, do you remember being 8 years old and having slumber parties? Putting on your robes and playing with each other’s hair and makeup, while gossiping about the cute boy next door? There was camaraderie between you and the girls. Girls ruled and boys drooled.
BeverlyD brings back these times with her hair parties for women. With the launch of her 100 percent organic, eco-friendly hair and body products, BeverlyD began throwing these parties.
“I want to build women and community. So much of our lives are separate; we get caught up in our own lives, our own little bubbles,” she said. “Hair parties bring women together. When we come together, we talk and connect. A lot of good out comes out of it.”
Women can host these parties or attend one. They come in comfy clothes or robes and bring their own blow dryers, brushes and styling tools. The spa ritual starts with food. They prepare a healthy and organic meal made with local products. Then comes appreciation time, where the women go around and tell what they appreciate in their lives.

Ron King launches new cosmetics line

Ron King’s new line of cosmetics is all about moisturizing and revitalizing the skin. It’s easy-to-wear makeup for an on-the-go Texas lifestyle.
King’s line was developed specifically for use in Texas weather. It is made to wear well in humidity and is very light on the skin. With Austin’s heat, many people are looking for something that isn’t heavy — makeup that doesn’t feel like a mask.
“I wanted something everyone could use that fits the weather in Texas — something light and sheer to meet all ranges of skin tones and ethnicities,” King said.
His line of Mineral Tints with SPF 20 ($28) is vitamin-based and vitamins A, C and E — along with Ginkgo Biloba and Ginseng — provide antioxidants and nourishing nutrients. It also has light-diffusing pigments that help fade lines away. This comes in a pump tube, and you can apply with your fingers, so you don’t waste money and time with brushes and sponges. It’s on the go.
You can wear Mineral Tints alone or after applying King’s Retexturizing Face Primer, also with SPF 20 ($26). The primer plays an important role in smoothing the face and prepping it for quick, even application. And for unsightly spots or under-eye areas, King’s Mineral Photo Touch concealer ($28) contains sodium hyoluronate, which attracts and holds up to 1,800 times its own weight in water to fill in the space between collagen and elastin fibers while refreshing the skin. Its corrective micro-spheres help to diffuse light for a camera-ready, flawless complexion … so you’ll be ready for your next A-List photo op.
Finish the look with King’s Lip Plump ($39.95), which also serves as a sheer lip treatment. It comes in four of King’s favorite shades. The Lip Plump draws moisture to the lips and keeps lips lubricated and plump. And with regular application, it actually decreases visible lines by 63 percent when applied three times a day over a 28-day period.
You can buy any of these products at King’s Bo Salon, Steiner Ranch Dermatology, and Restora Plastic Surgery.

Luxury hair oil long time in the making
Austin-based celebrity hairdresser Giacomo Forbes, 904 W. 12th St.has launched a new Organic Hair Oil Treatment after — get this — 18 years of experimentation.
The treatment is a custom blend of grape seed oil and the essential oils of French jasmine and organic mandarin, specially designed to heal damaged hair and give it a lustrous, healthy shine.
The native Italian stumbled upon an all-grape-seed oil treatment when he ran out of olive oil and discovered that grape seed was actually better. The jasmine and mandarin elements then came to him in a dream.
Celebrity client Ali Larter (“Heroes”) claims that this method of development makes perfect sense, saying, “Giacomo is an artist, and these hair oils are a natural extension of his creativity.”
The cost? $35 for 4 ounces.

Retailers to give away cosmetics to settle lawsuit
Starting today, several big retailers will giveaway $175 million worth of free high-end cosmetics including such brands as Estee Lauder and L’Oreal to consumers as part of a class-action settlement alleging that the stores planned to fix prices.
Department stores such as Macy’s and Nordstrom will distribute free cosmetics as long as supplies last to shoppers who bought certain cosmetics between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003 to settle claims that the stores violated antitrust laws and tried to fix prices.
The offer is part of an agreement to settle a lawsuit filed in 2003 in a California federal court. The suit alleges stores tried to limit sales and scale back on the amount of cosmetics in their inventory, thereby keeping both prices and competition high.
The department stores involved in the matter have denied any wrongdoing.
Shoppers are only permitted to receive one product made by cosmetic companies that include Chanel, Estee Lauder and L’Oreal USA, among others.
Stores participating in the settlement include: Bergdorf Goodman, Bergner’s, Bloomingdale’s, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Dillard’s, Gottschalks, Herberger’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Parisian, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Younkers.
Representatives for Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s could not be immediately reached for comment.
A complete list of products set for distribution next week is available at http://www.cosmeticssettlement.com.

Beauty bubbly in a jar
Mimosa Champagne Body Lotion?
That will get you in the holiday spirit!
Skin care libations abound in the Eminence skin-care line, an organic, eco-friendly line loved by celebs such as Alicia Silverstone and Gabrielle Reece.
A central feature in the latest offerings is the Hungarian Tokay Ice Wine Masque, $52, with polyphenols that fortify, tone and restore — something you might need after a few too many sips of bubbly. Actual fruit juices and pulp pack a punch that smells superb.
The line is sold at Embellish Nails in the Triangle, 4615 N. Lamar Blvd., Suite 300, 452-7465.

Meet Myka, the new gal in town

I recently stumbled into one of the cutest, most unique make-up stores I’ve been to in a long time.
Myka, located in the Escarpment Shopping Center off Slaughter Lane, sells handmade organic mineral make-up, including powders for the face, cheeks and eyes, plus body dusts. They also make their own lip gloss, body scrubs and lotion. My favorite so far is the mint sugar scrub and matching lotion.
Everything is very reasonably priced, from lotion starting at $2 to face powder at $22. The make-up was even used in decorating the store: writing on the walls, coloring the tea lamps, and on the bathroom floor and ceiling.
Myka was born when owner Lori Marie Erickson had to quit her full-time job due to a combination of illnesses that left her fatigued and unable to do anything for longer than 60 seconds. Three years later, she went to a nutritionist whose receptionist was allergic to perfume and realized a few days later that she, too, was affected by chemicals in perfume, soap, make-up and countless other products. After doing some research and making some life changes, Lori found an old make-up recipe — and Myka took off from there.
The make-up is organic and handmade, and there’s also the option to customize it if you, like Lori, have an allergy to certain chemicals found in everyday products. She even hosts a class on chemical sensitivities ($20) if you’re unsure of your allergies to certain chemicals or want to learn more about what is going onto your face every time you apply make-up. There is also an array of other classes offered, from beauty basics for adults, teens and tweens to a special effects make-up training course, which might be fun around Halloween.
Or perhaps you have a reason to celebrate and are thinking of booking a private party for a birthday, wedding or any occasion. Myka will take care of you and your guests with the option to have a fashion photo shoot, create your own eye shadow or organic sugar scrub, or offer lessons in makeup artistry.
I could go on and on about the details and personality of this little store, but you really need to go check it out for yourself. For more information, go to www.mykastore.com.

Celebrate a now classic store with perfume
Who doesn’t love a classic — the Volkswagen Beetle, Batman and Banana Republic?
Yes, the Banana, which is known for preppy chic looks among the white-collar set, is 30 this year, and certainly the milestone means something in this down economy and for weathered parent company Gap Inc. As part of the fanfare for the brand, the Classic fragrance is back, formulated as an eau de parfum rather than an eau de toilette for a stronger and richer scent.
The scent has increased cedar and teak wood notes to add body. Limited Edition Classic is $48 and available at bananarepublic.com and stores at the Domain and Barton Creek Square through the end of the year.
