Business owners celebrate natural hair

If you have naturally curly hair, many of you know that Austin is the headquarters of the curly kingdom because of the ladies at NaturallyCurly.com.

The good news for Austin is that with them here, we get events that might bypass us for bigger locales such as New York City or Houston.

Case in point? This month’s Natural Hair Celebration, featuring sisters Titi and Miko Branch, creators of the Miss Jessie’s hair care line, who are celebrating their “Grow Out Challenge,” in which hundreds of women have blogged about growing their chemically relaxed locks to their naturally curly state.

The Sunday event at Avenue Five Institute, 8620 Burnet Road, will feature the Branch sisters, who will speak and do five styling demos on women with varying degrees of curliness.

The event starts at 1 p.m. and is free, but the organizers ask that attendees RSVP to HairEvent@NaturallyCurly.com.

Blondes versus brunettes -- the showdown

M5X00108_9.JPG

It’s a battle as old as time: the blonde versus the brunette.

Take it to the gridiron, and you have a fundraising flag football game played by some of the most amazing women in Austin. Blondes vs. Brunettes, the self-explanatory charity football game, supports Alzheimer’s research and is sponsored by the Ranch and the Menagerie.

Already a hit in Houston and Dallas, Austin’s inaugural game happens this spring. The kickoff party is Nov. 7 at 10 p.m. at the Ranch, 710A W. Sixth St. 241-0420, ext. 10.

Free, but there is a limited number of wristbands.
