Some New Orleans’ flavor comes to downtown shopping at the 2nd Street District with the recent addition of the new woman’s apparel and accessories boutique Hemline, which originated in the historic French Quarter. Hemline has expanded into a dozen locations throughout the South and Midwest over the decades, and now will be neighbors to 2nd Street District boutiques Missbehave and Eliza Page.
Known for its cutting-edge fashion for women of all ages, Hemline boasts more than 200 designer lines of shoes, accessories and clothing throughout their stores. Though Hemline has expanded its fashion reach, the store concentrates on giving each store its own personality.

'America's Next Top Model' Cycle 16: Weekly recap
Wednesday night’s episode of “America’s Next Top Model” was filled with the type of drama you’d expect from this show by now.
It started off with J. Alexander telling the models that their next challenge was going to be a fashion show for Geoffrey Mac, who has made garments for fashionista, singer and activist Lady Gaga.
Of course there was a twist. The contestants had to walk on a runway that used the element of fire and wear gloves that were actually on fire. Contestant Dalya Morrow won the challenge because her walk was eloquent despite the danger and fire elements surrounding her. She really knows how to work it on the runway. I hope that confidence pops up in her photos especially as the number of contestants gets smaller.
Next was an acting job. As we’ve seen in commercials and TV shows, models also have to play roles these days. The second challenge of the night was a “Mad Men”-style coffee commercial, in which the contestants had to play the roles of sexy, suggestive secretaries.
I had a feeling the almost androgynous Sara Longoria of Edinburg, Texas, would go home. She simply thought the role went against her feminist ways and said she’d be embarrassed if her friends saw the footage.
And you know what? I was right. Sara was let go by the judges, but she took it with stride.
So that’s one less Texan in the mix. Hannah Jones, the Houstonite who attends St. Edward’s University, and Belton resident Jaclyn Poole are still in the mix. And I have a feeling they make it pretty far in the competition.
Contestant Kasia Pilewicz might have won the commercial competition, but Jaclyn was very believable. In this episode, Jaclyn also showed her saucy side, especially when she was making the commercial and chatting later with host Tyra Banks. (I was expecting that from such a mild mannered Texas girl.) And Hannah stretched her wings as well in this episode. So that really makes me think they will make it into the top five.
Anyone else feel that way?

Today we’re starting an occasional blog feature called Guess Whose Shoes. We’ll take a photo of interesting shoes we see in our Austin travels and tell you who’s wearing them. It’s that simple.
On Wednesday night, I spotted these neutral, lace-up Christian Louboutin heels at the Art of Fashion show at the Long Center for the Performing Arts.
They were worn by Susan Platt, Saks Fifth Avenue’s general manager. (Yes, these shoes are from Saks.)

Starting this month, TOMS Shoes will offer a full collection of the signature slip-on shoes at Neiman Marcus stores, including the one at the Domain. The collection for men and women ranges from $78 to $125.
The collection for Neiman Marcus uses special linings, brushed metal logos, limited-edition grosgrain, thicker soles and high-quality fabrics. The shoes come in a revamped shoe bag.

The company has completed shoe drops in international spots such as Argentina and South Africa. Last fall, it completed its first U.S. shoe drop by giving away shoes in Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida.

Austin hairstylist Shawna Parvin wins international styling award
Hairstylist Shawna Parvin of Vain (1803 Chicon St. 512-524-1057) recently won the texture category of the North American Hairstyling Awards in Las Vegas, a style and beauty competition for professional hairstylists. (It’s like the Oscars for hairstylists, and, in 2007, Allen Ruiz of Jackson Ruiz Salon Spa won Hairstylist of the Year at the event. Also, Pink Hair Salon & Gallery owner Deborah Carter is a past winner.)
“The inspiration is, if you look at the images, you’ll see a story,” Parvin said. “You’ll see a tree, a bird and a nest. I wanted the story to fit within the category.”
She and Austin photographer, Holly Bronko, shot the hairstyles in January, and while on vacation in China in April, Parvin found out she was a finalist.
A select panel of more than 60 judges, including editors from Nylon, Glamour, OK! Magazine, Teen Vogue, Life & Style and Zink, judged more than 600 entries through an online judging process. Entries were cut down to five finalists per 12 categories, and a winner in each category was selected.

Want some 'Project Runway'? Season 4's Elisa Jimenez will be in Austin to sell fresh goods

Are you longing for the return of “Project Runway”? I know I am. It seems like it has been a million years since we’ve heard Heidi Klum say, “Auf wiedersehen,” to dismissed designers.
Well, you can get your fix this week as “Project Runway” Season 4 designer Elisa Jimenez (she’s the designer who spit on fabric as a blessing mark) returns to Austin for a one-night fashion event.
Jimenez, a University of Texas graduate, will offer selections from her three lines - prices will range from $20 to $225 - at the Pop-up & Play boutique at Malverde (400 W. Second St. 499-0300) from 6 to 9 p.m. April 2.
Joining Jimenez, who was named by Vogue as an emerging designer to watch, will be bag designer Moe Nadel of Meader Ware.
The available selections will be new, and a few will be from a showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.
I interviewed Jimenez for my column last year and found her to be funny and warm and focused unlike how she was portrayed on television. I definitely will drop by Malverde to see the wares of Jimenez and partner Nadel.

Goods of the Week: Ester Gamez's vintage jewelry

Perhaps you’re not going to buy a Western-style shirt or those cowboy boots you’ve been eyeing after all?
So why not leave Austin with something we also are known for - all things vintage? (Seriously, Austin is filled with vintage stores if you haven’t noticed.)
But back to a gift that might make you recall that crazy, music and tech-filled week you spent in A-Town at South by Southwest. (And for the Austinites, why not add some more vintage to your wardrobe?)
Well, that’s where Austinite Ester Gamez comes in.
Gamez loves jewelry. I immediately noticed the minute I chatted with her and saw her vintage jewelry collection of bracelets, earrings, necklaces and other goods.
Gamez’s hand-selected items, which range from $60 to more than $500, are available at Estilo (234 W. Second St. 512-236-0488).

Goods of the Week: Poggianti 1958 shirts

Maybe it’s the beautiful boxes in which these shirts are packaged. Or perhaps the appeal is the lightweight quality of these shirts.
Who am I kidding? Theses Italian-made shirts make me think about my trip to Italy years ago and all of the wonderful Old World food I ate. The pizza, the gelato, the pasta …
I found these babies, formally known as Poggianti 1958 shirts, in short and long sleeves at Keepers (515 Congress Ave. 512-473-2512). The average price is about $230.
Judging by the feel the cotton and linen used in the line, I’d say these shirts are perfect for a hot spring and summer in Austin. So if you don’t have time for a trip to Milan or Tuscany, perhaps owning one of these shirts ultimately will prove that Italians do it better.

Goods of the Week: Christian Louboutin's triple-platform heels

I was almost stunned when I saw this designer shoe among the other Christian Louboutin heels on display the other day at Neiman Marcus at the Domain. Of course, I had to take a photo and share it.
It’s the triple-platform heel that makes me wonder what woman could possibly wear these without falling. These shoes are so high they almost transcend being footwear. They are almost works of art and certainly an updated reminder of all things 1970s. Back then we were all about platforms, which actually date back to 16th century Greece.
For some reason, this shoe reminds me of Madonna’s shoes for 1993’s Girlie Show Tour. (Yes, I’m showing my age.) She sang and danced in platforms for most of the show. Of course, that show paid homage to the ’70s.
In the 1990s, designer Vivienne Westwood help reintroduce platform shoes to society. (I guess we should thank her.) And if you recall, model Naomi Campbell took a tumble on the runway wearing 5-inch and 9-inch platforms.
And today, we’re all about platform shoes and sandals again. I’ve seen plenty of shoes of considerable height available for spring and summer. (Good luck walking around in them!)
In case you’re wondering about a price, these colorful blue Louboutin gems can be yours for $1,095.

UPDATE: Austin boutique Fetish's goodbye sale begins

Austin boutique Fetish, a North Lamar Boulevard favorite among fashionistas who especially love shoes, is closing by spring because of the economy, owner Elizabeth Tigar told me today in an e-mail.
Tigar bought Fetish and its sister shop, Underwear, the nearby women’s foundation garments and lingerie store on West 12th Street, in 2007. She had been a longtime shopper and visitor to Fetish.
Former owner Kathy Branch, who decided to leave Austin last year for a new life in the Pacific Northwest, had spun off Fetish from Emeralds years ago. The boutique became well known for its Imelda Club, which rewarded frequent shoe shoppers. The club was named after Imelda Marcos, the former first lady in the Philippines who was famous for her 1,000 pairs of shoes.
Here’s my question-and-answer session with Tigar:
Why close Fetish, especially because it has had a loyal following for years?
Tigar: The economy dealt us a huge blow in the last half of 2008. While I would like to be optimistic, I couldn’t see us making a recovery in the near future. The decision was a hard one - it breaks my heart to disappoint our loyal customers - but I believe it was the most responsible one I can make at this point in time.
What’s next for you?
Tigar: I plan to devote my energies into Underwear, which is still a growing business with lots of potential.
What are your plans for Underwear?
Tigar: I may expand our loungewear offerings at Underwear, but other than the occasional sexy bedroom slipper, I don’t see us selling any shoes. Given the economy, how is business at Underwear?
Tigar: Business is steady and growing at Underwear, and I look forward to seeing it grow further. Changes will be slow, but I plan to expand our collection of unique lingerie and continue offering a wide range of everyday necessities.
I want the store to reflect a woman’s needs and desires, from basics to boudoir in a wide range of price points. Look for sexy, innovative new additions to our inventory, and maybe some changes to the interior of the store.
Also, a brand new Web site with e-commerce is in the works, and should be up within the next year. The lingerie industry, particularly on the design side, is growing rapidly. I’m always struck by creative new designs, and I can’t wait to bring them to the Austin market.
When will you close Fetish?
Tigar: Our last day of business has yet to be determined. But I anticipate that it will be in the last few days of February or in early March. Right now we are in the middle of our half-price sale. We will begin our 75 percent off (jewelry will be 50 percent) sale starting early next week.
UPDATE: I’ve received several text messages this morning about Fetish’s closing sale, which started today.
From what I’ve been told, the store was a mob scene of shoppers this morning with 75 percent off clothing, shoes and accessories and 50 percent off jewelry.

Keepers to offer new Zenga Club
Without a doubt, I adore Ermenegildo Zegna’s suits. The Italian fashion house has truly become a world leader in menswear. Zenga is well-fitting, masculine and uses light-weight wools that are ideal for Austin’s warm climate.
One of the spots to get Zenga in Austin is Keepers (515 Congress Ave. 512-473-2512). The men’s store, which is on the ground level of the Bank of America building, will present its new Zegna Club at the Gruppo di Zegna Celebration from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30.
Check out selections from Zegna. There also will be a wine tasting and appetizers.
The event will include an introduction to Keepers’ Zegna Club and a complimentary bottle of wine if you join. The event and club sign-up are free to the public.
While you’re there, you can pick up a nice pinstriped Zenga suit for me. (Kidding. Just kidding.)

Celebrity stylist Mark-Alan Harmon to visit Prime Outlets event
Celebrity stylist Mark-Alan Harmon - he’s a combo of Perez Hilton and Carson Kressley with a hint of Michael Kors - will drop by Prime Outlets in San Marcos for an evening of shopping, song and charity. The free event goes from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 24.
If you go, check out a performance by San Antonio’s Three Tenors including Don Braswell, who recently came in fourth place on “America’s Got Talent.” There also will be a silent auction benefiting the San Antonio Opera.
The event will feature cocktails and appetizers and store discounts. Catherine Malandrino will donate 10 percent of sales from the evening to the opera.
For the tried-and-true fashionistas, there will be a full runway fashion show. Harmon will be the host.
While I didn’t find a Web site for Harmon, I found this little promotional video. At the very least, you’ll see Harmon in a “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style”-type video. He walks you through how to get good deals while outlet shopping.

An evening with the Bushes at Whole Foods
Thursday evening was spent at a private party for the launch of Lauren Bush’s Feed 100 bag at Whole Foods.
There was African-inspired food and drumming and a handful of Austinites and Whole Foods officials in the Whole Foods Market Culinary Center.
(Missing from the mix when I was at the party was Bush’s cousin Jenna Bush, who has been spotted in Austin in the days leading up to her Saturday wedding in Crawford.)
Lauren Bush, a former model who’s dating Ralph Lauren’s son David, was joined at the event by her father, Neil Bush, President Bush’s younger brother, as well as an assortment of family members.

As her beaming father watched, Lauren Bush, who grew up in Houston, told guests about her determination as a Princeton student to get her bag concept into Whole Food’s 11 regional markets.
Bush and her FEED co-founder Ellen Gustafson (right) started the project in 2007 and created the FEED 1 bag. They ended up raising donations for the United Nations World Food Program’s School Feeding operations.
In 2004, Bush became an honorary spokesperson for the World Food Program. She has traveled to eight countries visiting World Food Program operations and helped start the Universities Fighting Hunger Campaign in the U.S.
To grow their efforts, she and Gustafson have created an exclusive reusable tote bag called the FEED 100. This project supports the World Food Program’s school program, and each $29.99 bag purchase will help provide 100 meals to children in Rwanda.
The bag is made from 100 percent organic cotton and sustainable burlap; it folds and zips so it can fit into a handbag or backpack, and it is available at Whole Foods stores.
For more information on FEED, click here.

New stores for Second Street District
Last week, I wrote a column about new boutiques coming to Austin. Well, I’ve been told two more stores have just signed leases and will come to Second Street in the months ahead.
Minx will be a women’s clothing store started by two sisters from San Antonio. It will sell contemporary fashion with young new designers and open by May 1.
And there will be Beyond Traditions, a contemporary accessories store with a modern Southwestern style. Beyond Traditions owners have stores in Arizona and Park City, Utah. The store will take over the space of Shorelines Gallery and be open before Valentine’s Day.

Personal shoppers
Earlier today a reader posed an interesting question about personal shoppers, and being new to Austin, I don’t know the answer. If you have any advice, please send it my way. Gracias.
Here’s what she wrote: “After my baby comes … and once I’m feeling more like myself again … I am interested in using the help of a personal shopper. I’m not wealthy by any means, but I do sort of feel like it would be nice to have someone else who can see the “big picture” help me as I shop. I’d never be one of those people stopped on the street where the reporter asks what I’m wearing, but gee, wouldn’t that be nice? I want to look like myself; just a better, more polished version of myself.
However, my impression is that personal shoppers/style coaches are incredibly expensive and really only for the Donald Trumps of the world.
How does an average girl decide on a shopper to use, and what do they usually charge? Also, I’ve heard some department stores have this service. Do these angels exist anywhere close to Austin?”

Check this out

The other day I had coffee with Toms shoes founder and Austin native Blake Mycoskie. Blake flew in from California the night before we met. We grabbed some joe at Progress Coffee in East Austin.
In a hurry to get to the interview, I made a major boo-boo. I had forgotten my wallet at home. And of course I discovered this after I had placed my order. (Blake picked up the tab. Thanks, Blake!) Check out our interview on statesman.com.

After our chat, Blake and I walked over to The Royal Family, one of many boutiques that sell Toms shoes. What I discovered is a little shopping gem outside the number of stores and boutiques making up downtown Austin.

I love T-shirts, and The Royal Family had several shirts that caught my eye.
