Hey, Austin bands — Arthouse has a gig for you
Need a place for your band to rehearse? Arthouse has 90 spots for bands of any kind to take part in “Rehearsal at the Astoria,” a new project opening Feb. 3 at the downtown contemporary art center.
London-based visual artist Graham Hudson — with his first project in the United States — will transform Arthouse’s main gallery into an actual stage with seating for about 200 made from scaffolding. Hudson’s project pays homage to London’s iconic music venue The Astoria Theatre.
The site of seminal concerts by everyone from Rage Against the Machine and David Bowie to Madonna and the Rolling Stones, the Astoria was a former pickle factory located on London’s Charing Cross Road . It was demolished in 2009 to make way for new urban development.
Hudson’s installation aims to connect the Astoria’s storied past with Austin’s current claim as “The Live Music Capital of the World.” And so he’s inviting bands of all kinds a chance to rehearse in public on his re-imagined Astoria stage. Bands may be playing to a few people, or a packed house depending.
Approximately 90 rehearsal slots two to three hours long are available during the course of the exhibition which runs until April 10. And yes, that means it’ll be on-going through South By Southwest Music Festival.
