Molly Ivins play (finally) lands in Austin
“Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins” will get its run in Austin beginning Jan. 29 at Zach Theatre.

The show, based on the writings of the free-thinking, whip-smart, comically-gifted Texas-based journalist, premiered last year at Philadelphia Theatre Company and starred Kathleen Turner. Ever since, there’s been chatter to bring the play, written by twin journalist sisters, Margaret and Allison Engel, to Austin, Ivins’ former stomping ground and long-time home base.
Now, the show is being produced by Zach and directed by Broadway’s David Esbjornson, who led the original production. The inimitable Barbara Chisholm will star as Ivins in the one-woman show.
Said Margaret Engel in December on a visit to Austin, “It’s the right audience (here) to see this show.”
“‘Ivins was an extremely insightful writer, a seer — and yet she could have been a stand-up comedian,” said Engel. “(My sister and I) thought it was very important that the world kept remembering the words that she said.”
Ivins died in 2007 at age 62 after a public battle with cancer.
