78 artists take the Texas chair challenge
They dare to chair.
Seventy-eight artists have agreed to participate in artist Damian Priour’s Texas Chair Project, a unique artistic exchange project that will offer artists and art audiences the chance to contemplate all things ‘chair.’
Last year, Priour created 100 little chairs made from his signature combination of glass and limestone, chairs such as this one:
After exhibiting them at the Austin Museum of Art last spring, Priour sent the chairs in 8-inch square boxes to a list of artists he came up with and asked them to each create a chair of their own and send it back. Nobody knew they were on Priour’s list until they received the box. The only creative limitation — the chair must fit into the same 8-inch square box. But any medium — painting, photography, film or whatever — is acceptable. (Priour reserved 10 of his chairs for collectors who want to help sponsor the project.)
Artists who have accepted Priour’s creative chair challenge: Ellen Abbott, Bale Creek Allen, Helen Altman, Paul Beck, Jill Bedgood, Ellen Berman, Paul Booker, Kate Breakey, Candace Briceno, Holli Brown, Steve Brudniak, Malcolm Bucknall, William Cannings, Belinda Casey, Roger Colombik, Cathy Cunningham, Stephen Daly, Jerry Daniel, David Deming, Fidencio Duran, David Everett, Malou Flato, Virginia Fleck, Mark Greenwalt, Ken Hale, T. Once the newly created chairs are returned to Priour, they will all go on exhibit at the Austin Museum of Art in November. Plans for a traveling exhibit are being explored.
