State Theatre shifts two shows
Officials at the State Theatre announced Thursday that two upcoming productions will move to new venues after damage caused by a water main break early Tuesday left the stage unusable.
The Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance Company will perform June 24 and 25 at McCullough Theatre at the University of Texas’ Performing Arts Center. The McCullough will also now host the Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company on July 8 and 9.
Portions of the historic State Theatre building on Congress Avenue were submerged for several hours after a city water main underneath the alley behind the theater burst.
The stage suffered major damage, a lighting grid was destroyed, and about 25 percent of the seats were damaged along with backstage production areas, theater officials said. Preliminary estimates put damages at $100,000.
The State’s current show, “Bunk Bed Brothers,” was moved next door to the Paramount Theatre, canceling the weekend schedule of the theater’s popular summer film series, which will resume Tuesday.
Ken Stein, executive director of the Paramount and State theaters, said he was cautiously optimistic that a production of “American Fiesta,” the award-winning play by Austinite Steven Tomlinson, will open as scheduled July 19.
