Right on Ellen. I Austinites attach a certain level of pride to the “weird” tag. Just because it’s in TX and open minded and not Republican, doesn’t make it weird.

I love Austin…BRING BACK THE NORTH/SOUTH TUG O WAR…Bubbas Vs. Yuppies!!!

This is really a good article and tell a real story of snakes.it really amazed me.

I live in D.C. and have lived in N.Y. so I never quite understood the caps and shirts which read “Keep Austin Weird”. To me it seems more like a sleepy Mayberry. If you want weird, come to the big cities. You have to pay more to live here, but the shows come free with dinner at any street cafe. This said, I love the bats and, well, I guess they’re a little weird…but good weird!

Hi - thanks for the great write-up! I’d like to clear up a few misconceptions, though.

First of all, the self defense class you witnessed was geared towards karate students, so it looked a little different than a class geared toward those who don’t study karate. The belts, for instance. :) Also, a lot of the formality that’s observed in a martial arts environment isn’t if the class is self defense.

And speaking of formality - you mention that, “prior to entering the locker room, they had to bow toward the instructor.” This isn’t actually true. Karate students bow towards the training space when entering or leaving it, as a sign of respect and appreciation for the physical place.

Also, when you note that, “Coming out of the locker room and onto the mat to join the rest of the group, the students had to kneel on the ground till acknowledged by the instructor” - this is actually only true if a student joins class late, and only when they’re joining (not every time they enter the training area). It’s part tradition, and part safety.

Karate at Sun Dragon does involve a lot of bowing, as a way of maintaining the traditions the founders of the art instilled. Respect is an important aspect, and at the beginning and end of every class, we do four traditional bows - to the space, the instructor, assistants, and to all students.

Again, all of the bowing and belt-wearing, etc, comes out of the martial arts practice, and isn’t part of self defense training, except when it’s geared toward martial arts students, as it was when you visited.

Osu!

It seems to be a misconception of many that a protein bar is actually supposed to be balanced to aid in weight loss. Actually all it is supposed to be is an alternative to making shakes or cooking to get the protein you need. Companies advertise that certain protein bars have 30 grams of protein or some amazing number that sounds like you just eat it and you’re competing for Mr. Universe. The body can only injest so many grams of protein alone before some of it is stored as fat. Anything over about 21 grams of protein is getting either flushed, literally, and then a very small amount will be stored as fat depending on just how mush you tried to injest. Some people that attempt the diets that allow only protein with very little other sustenance experience liver or kidney problems/issues due to the amounts of amino acids the body is trying to process.

Go OUTLAWS!!!!

Um, please forgive me for my candor, but lousy article, dull and sleep inducing.

Wow. I’m disappointed. A professional journalist such as yourself should know better than to play with someone’s property without permission and/or supervision. That, and not researching what you write about before it is published? It’s bad journalistic conduct.

What would you have done if you actually had dropped the rock on your foot? Of course you would have broken your foot. You very possibly could have broken the rock as well. The rink does not own those rocks, so who would you sue? Someone who didn’t even give you permission to touch the equipment, much less pick it up? Curlers don’t even pick them up for long periods of time. You would have known that- had you asked a curler. How would you have handled it if you had broken the rock? Seeing as it’s not the rink’s responsibility, how would you let the curling club know what you did, if you even said anything at all? Yes, of course there are “all the ingredients for an Austin club to start up”. That’s because there is already a club. One doesn’t need to “start up”. Ever stop to think about that? Like I said- do some research before you send stuff to your editor. That’s the professional thing to do. Don’t play with stuff that’s not yours. That’s the responsible thing to do.

I must take issue with the writer’s observation that the old rink was an “obstruction.” I walked in NC every day for exercise, and for me it was the center of everything. I enjoyed watching the skaters, fathers took pictures of their kids on the ice, birthday parties were regular features, and families observed from benches. On a hot summer day, it was nice and cold inside. I miss NC and the rink like a favorite friend — NOT an obstruction.

Hi, we like the new rink too! There is actually a curling club in Austin and in 2009 we’ll be hosting a Bonspiel with the other Texas clubs … along with a few out of state teams as well. This past season we curled Sunday mornings and the club is deciding on dates for an open house and possible summer league. If you’re interested in trying, let me know and I’ll forward your info to one of our club directors :)

Nice article. Sounds like you had fun. There is already a curling club in Austin if you’re interested. It’s been around for a few years, curling on Sunday mornings at Northcross. They’re even scheduled host a big Texas tournament next year.

Their website is: www.lonestarcurlingclub.com

Enjoy!

Most of the carbs in these bars is in the form of sugar, which effectively “cancels out” the reason to eat them in the first place. You oughtta do a comparison of protein bars with the highest amount of protein vs lowest amount of sugar. Or maybe I should do this. Hmmm…

You should try the Detour bars. 30g of protein with about the least amount of sugar I have seen in any energy bar. They actually don’t taste half bad either.

When you’re ready to graduate to the next level try NavySEALConditioningCourse at Zilker Park under the moonlight tower 530am three weeks per month.
