Ian Peoples on ‘Touring the Motherland’

As the Entertainment Journalism class at St. Edward’s University wraps up for the semester, I’ll republish some of the best features, reviews, interviews and breaking new stories from the nine students.

This short-form review is from blogger Ian Peoples. His blog for the class is Keeping it Easy. Check it out.

‘Touring the Motherland’

Two actors from Great Britain, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, star in ‘Touring the Motherland,’ a mockumentary about the pair’s trip across northern Britain.

Steve was originally supposed to be accompanied by his girlfriend, but she goes back to America, and Steve is forced into asking decade-long acquaintance, Rob.

The subtle humor in this movie is remarkable and really comes close to defining British satirical culture.

Rob is a ‘babbling’ character who specializes in impersonations. He and Steve naturally clash due to a combination of Steve’s competitive nature as well as a career that is fading out.

Rob is as lighthearted as they come, and plays off the best — and often hurtful — of Steve’s verbal attacks. The duo battle back and forth throughout the movie in what makes for truly amusing banter full of wit and irony.

The ending of the movie reflects the type of men Steve and Rob have become respectively.

Steve is a man who takes life a bit too seriously and has become sour from it. Rob is a well-meaning man who enjoys entertaining the group.

Mildly dark but sleight and clever, The Trip was rewarded five stars on my Netflix stream
