Preservation Awards at Driskill Hotel
The Preservation Awards luncheon, given by the Heritage Society of Austin, is one annual meal I’d hate to miss. This year’s was graced by the triple presence of Lifetime Achievement winner Wayne Bell — heard on the presentation video, seen briefly on the dais and enjoyed at architect Emily Little’s table at the center of the Driskill Hotel upper lobby.
Jerry Harris and Alice Glasco
If you are unfamiliar with Bell, one of the state’s leading preservationists, please refer to this article. Nobody deserves the lifetime award — given for only the third time in the Society’s 51 year history — than Bell, who moves with his partner, Eric Willem, to the Pacific Northwest very soon.
Katherine Malm and Mike Dismukes
Also honored was the Dismukes family for preserving Peter Pan Mini-Golf and Save Austin Cemeteries for their public service. Four renovation and adaptive projects won merit awards: the mid-century American National Bank Building on West Sixth Street, the Craftsman-style McCulloch House on Harthan Street, the Victorian Alberto Garcia House on Newning Avenue and the petite McDonald-Cain House on East Cesar Chavez.
Dawnna Dukes and Mandy Dealey
Each rescue story moved me. Keep it up, Heritage Society, glorify our architectural bequest.
