Austin Fashion Week Launch Party at Cowboy Harley-Davidson
Better. So much better. The Austin Fashion Week Opening Party moved indoors this year. Blessed, blessed air-conditioning.
Fashion Week in Austin is as much about the socializing as the clothing. Folks mingled for a good two hours before the first of three runway shows — and rock concert — began. The Cowboy Harley-Davidson dealership on Interstate 35 easily handled the the several hundred guests — seemingly all with cameras — handily on two levels.

Leather. Metal. Denim. These were the obvious themes, on and off the runway. Models draped over motorcycles. HD gear complemented the sassy little club outfits provided by Betsey Johnson.

From the point of view of a social columnist, it worked. As my colleague Marques Harper said, and I am paraphrasing: “It takes 90 minutes just to say hello to everyone!” Well, that will wear off as Fashion Week builds to the Austin Fashion Awards on Saturday.

After the daily showcases at the Driskill Hotel and countless side parties, the socializing will relax into mere nods and gestures of passing happiness by Thursday. I don’t plan to make as many FW events as I did last year. Quality over quantity. Let’s see if I can accomplish that goal with Austin’s other delightful festivals, too.
