Leadership Austin Emerge Party at TenOak
The people who enroll in Leadership Austin are ambitious. Not in an exclusively careerist way, although most of them count as part of the upwardly mobile professional class. But rather in a civic way, hoping to make the Austin better through its businesses, nonprofits, governments and other social tools.

“Emerge” is the shortened version of Leadership Austin’s training program. It tends to attract young, busy types for whom profound civic impact is still years off. Several dozen of them attended a boisterous happy hour at TenOak on Thursday.

This lounge, by the way, is the latest concept from Michael Gerard and Diggy Taylor. Gerard recently restructured his two nearby establishments, Imperia and Speakeasy. TenOak is a classy, New South replacement — celebrating rare bourbons and new-fangled food — for his Cuba Libre that stood in the same spot on Colorado Street.

Anyway, the back room fit the needs of Leadership Austin concisely. The group’s director is upright, open-featured Heather McKissock. Her crisp, to-the-point speaking style and thoughtful reflections on Austin’s fate make her a natural leader and rewarding conversational partner.
Malini Rajput and Craig Reid
After talking to several Emerge graduates and potential recruits, I relaxed a bit about the direction of Austin’s future.
