Neighborhood Longhorns Dinner at Barton Creek Resort and Spa

First the setting: The Neighborhood Longhorns dined at the Barton Creek Resort and Spa on Wednesday. The winding approach to the towering hotel is spectacularly green, even during a drought. Setting aside reasonable reservations about water usage, it’s hard to deny the effect of all that landscaping.

I’m still a bit of a stranger to Barton Creek — the resort, not the stream — finding my way through the halls to the various clubs, restaurants, meeting rooms and dining halls to attend different social events. This benefit buffet, coupled with a golfing expedition, was laid out in the resort’s relaxing pavilion. Casually outfitted, this structure offers fair views of the steep hills in the distance and minutely tended golf course below. The fading light hovered over the diners at dusk.

This outing proved a variation on the “dinner with the coaches” model, so I finally was able to introduce myself to women’s basketball helmer Gail Goestenkors. Also kidded around with “cousin” Rick Barnes from the men’s side. Barnes served as the keynote speaker and, although I didn’t stick around long enough to hear this particular speech, I can attest that the coach is highly effective on the dais.

The charitable cause needs no extra push from these quarters. It’s a well-established one: The nonprofit helps economically disadvantaged kids with academic resources. Genial financial advisor Edward Moody invited me to the dinner part of the fundraiser, knowing that I’m not a golfing kind a guy. As chairman of the event, Moody must have pleased with the impressive showing, given high 90s out on the course. For my part, I savored the cool of the shade and the pavilion.
