Glossy 8 at West Austin Home

On Thursday, the staff of the American-Statesman’s luxury magazine presented the Glossy 8 at a West Austin palace. The word “palace” fits. A French comtesse would be satisfied with the Davenport Village-area home for sale through Turnquist Partners.

In case you are confused about the numbers of honorees, the staff chooses from reader nominations eight Austin style-makers. Except one of the eight is a couple, so that makes it 8 + 1.

As usual at these events, the guests swept past the luxury cars, perhaps eyeing the sales models more closely on the driveway, before exploring every detail of the hilltop palace. (Even those who sniff at such luxuries couldn’t hide their curiosity.) Food and drink were in healthy supply. Humidity on the cliff above Lake Austin drove people inside, but the pool area remained intermittently popular.

As always, technical glitches threatened to derail the evening. Except this time, I pitched in to solve the problems, since fashion writer Marques Harper and I were making the actual presentations by the pool.

I stressed out. Which turned my already orange face splotchy. Which made me self-conscious. Which made me more stressed. A vicious cycle.

While I tried to fade into the woodwork, the Glossy 8 looked absolutely radiant and immaculately attired. That alone should have reduced some of my stress, knowing that we picked some of the right people to salute.

“Queer Eye” star Carson Kressley arrived, instantly charming everyone with his warmth, generosity and humor. (Few stars behave this way.) When I introduced him to the crowd, Kressley stole the show with clever improvisations. Never compete with a pro.

A good portion of the fashion community showed up, including some former Glossy 8 winners. And much was made of the Beauty of Life lunch to be held Friday morning, where the Glossy 8 was presented again, and where Kressley kept the crowd roaring for a good 30 minutes. More on that later.

Michael, no one would have known you were nervous (from a distance, anyway)! You handled it like a champ. It was a lovely event and the photos and stories about the Glossy 8 recipients are amazing.
