Your A-List: Best 24-Hour Restaurant
The list of 24-hour restaurants in Austin is still distressingly short. Even with the debut of Twenty Four in the former Waterloo Ice House location on North Lamar Boulevard. In fact, all the nominees in the A-List brawl for Best 24-Hour Restaurant — locals and chains — have been around forever.
Four-headed Kerbey Lane, long a college redoubt, triumphed this time with 42 percent of the vote.
Doubled-up Magnolia Cafe, forever open, challenged with 33 percent.
Katz’s, which never “klozes” on suddenly popular West Sixth Street, lagged at 13 percent.
Hipster hangout Star Seeds served 5 percent, while chainies IHOP, Waffle House and Denny’s made do with 4 percent or less.

I'm not sure if we are all looking at the same thing but Kerbey got 42% of the vote not 20%.

Hmm...Looks like I might be the only one who prefers Kerbey. Hello...sweet potato fries! (With their honey mustard, of course.) When it comes to homefries, though, Mag's definitely beats Kerbs.
I also prefer the breakfast at Mag's. Before I fell for Kerbey I went to Mag's A LOT and only ever ordered breakfast because the few other menu options I did try weren't great. When I switched to Kerbey, I started out just ordering breakfast, but didn't enjoy it as much. But it's decent AND there are many other menu items I like (my menu item of choice for about half a year now: turkey and avocado sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries.)

I'm gonna have to side with Magnolia on this one too. Ever since I have been in Austin I have always gone to Mag's over Kerby. To me, if you don't go to Mag's, you settle for Kerby. It is more convenient, the food is better and so is the coffee.

I'm a die hard Magnolia fan. I think it is one of very few restaurants that I could eat at everyday and enjoy it.

I really don't know how anyone could pick Magnolia over Kerbey, or vice versa, based on any meaningful criteria. To me, the two restaurants are virtually indistinguishable in terms of menu items, price, service, and atmosphere. As a previous poster suggested, it must boil down to location...or am I missing something?

Being a St Ed's Student, I would have to go for Magnolia's over Kerby Lane. It's just more convenient. I'm a little confused too over how 20% beats 33%. Might want to check on that :)

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but how does Kerbey Lane triumph with 20 percent of the vote if the runner-up received 33 percent?

Katz's wouldn't be so bad if it didn't smell like fried pickles.
