Jaston Williams’ Lubbock Tony inflation

M5X00156_9.JPG
Let’s start by saying I am Jaston Williams’ No. 1 fan. Loved the “Tuna” series. Adored the Austin-based writer/performer’s soul-baring solo shows about growing up in West Texas.

So don’t go looking for an under-the-table Jaston Williams dig here.

Yet when I received a press packet from the Lubbock Community Theatre advertising the debut of Williams’ “Blame It on Valentine, Texas,” I was taken aback by the line above the title for the coming attraction at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theatre show — “4-Time Tony Award Nominee.”

How do we say this? Jaston probably deserves a Tony Award nomination, but Broadway voters have not wised up to that fact yet.

I rifled through the press material and I think I see where the theater’s publicity department went wrong. He’s a 4-time nominee for the Helen Hayes Award, given in the Washington D.C. market, where the “Tuna” series is almost as popular as in Austin.

I know Jaston is cringing right now. And the LCT is wishing it could recall the mail. Only Jaston could come up with the appropriate, half-indulgent West Texas joke to insert here, maybe about the psychic distance between Lubbock and Broadway or the Kennedy Center being roughly equal.

where the heck does the slam at The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal fit in this; the mistake evidently was made in a press release by the theater.

The tape on Jaston's picture? Right now I wish it was on my mouth! We certainly did not intentionally mis-count or mis-catagorize those nominations; perhaps it was a chad-thing . . . or our Marketeers were actually Mouseketeers, or a simply typo (who'da thunk it?)from a well-meaning but uninformed, or mis-informed, or un-proofed volunteer, God bless their hearts every one. To sum it up,oops, end of story. In any case, we stand corrected, a very tiny bit embarrassed, but still very excited about Jaston's fund-raiser for the Lubbock Community Theatre, Blame it on Valentine Texas. It's a good thing, so come see for yourself! Jim Bush, President, Lubbock Community Theatre

I would like to ask Mr. Adair just how many award winners of any kind have offered to raise money, with nothing in return, for a theatre he has been involved in? I bet that number is zero. LCT is trying to raise money in order to provide a better Community Theatre experience to everyone. Your negativity is just petty and uncalled for.

I wish I could say I was surprised at the lack of research by Lubbock Community Theatre and reporting by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

You're right: Mr. Williams DOES deserve to be nominated multiple times.
