Facebook filters into real life, Part 4

For Parts 1, 2 & 3, see posts below…

It happened at Robert Nash and Paul Simmons’ annual holiday bash up in West Lake Hills and at Anton Nel’s birthday concert in his apartment above Barton Creek — an event attended by big name after big name, including former Ambassador Pam Willeford and Dr. George Willeford III, and well as foreign intelligence expert George Friedman and his wife Meredith.

I encountered the digital-to-live mash-up at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar and Austin Shakespeare Festival’s musical revue “Celebrate.” It played a part in the Any Baby Can donor appreciation event at Thistle on Sixth, the pub trivia at Mother Egan’s and the All Called and What’s Your Response meet-ups at Annie’s West. It’s partly how I knew about the Austinist holiday party at the Palm Door and the open house for the Marlin House given by Green Mango Real Estate.

And if I don’t already know the person online, the connection comes later. If we share a substantive conversation at a party or a club, I dial them up on Facebook the next morning. Almost every time, a new, promising connection is made.

Will all this civility last? Will any of these social-media associations survive the blush of first tweeting? Can the mind process all that social information mingled from online and offline entanglements?

It’s anybody’s guess. Human psychology suggests that disrespect and hostility can erupt like a tropical virus anywhere, any time.

For now, I’m thankful for the near-universal affability, off- and online.
