Country & Piano Bar: Expanded Rusty Spurs
Don’t bury the lead: Rusty Spurs owner Jim Stotz is taking over management of the next-door Black & Tan club on Seventh Street. And, working with the owners, he’s opening — don’t faint, fellow musical queens — a piano bar! Couldn’t you just die?

I was at the country-themed RS for an Austin Babtist Women benefit for Breast Cancer Resource Centers. The high-haired Women have raised millions of dollars for charities and their fans flocked to the Spurs’ indoor stage for the spoofing.

Previously, a bagpipe brigade played outside, while inside the connected B&T space, New York-based drag artist Victoria Westin performed expertly to recorded orchestrations. What a voice! And what a Susan Hayward circa “Valley of the Dolls” look!

One of the things I like about the Spurs is the clientele, who mirror the tremendous variety of the gay, lesbian and allied communities, not just the highly groomed end of the spectrum. I was dressed in what Alice Wilson, formerly of Zach Theatre, sweetly dubbed as “distinguished” clothiing, yet I didn’t feel the least bit uncomfortable among the country, trucker, cabaret, celtic, post-frat and other drag.
