Hey, Kristin from Do512
Kristin,
I know you are reading this. How do I know?
Friday night at the Noise Revival Orchestra’s Masquerade Ball, a polite young gentleman approached me, issuing this line:
“I hope this is not inappropriate — but are you Michael Barnes?”“Sure. Why would that be inappropriate?”
“I didn’t want to bother you, but my girlfriend, Kristin Owen of Do512, is always talking about you.”
“Talking? Good talk or bad talk?”
“She really respects your work.”
“Oh. … That’s OK then. I really like what’s she’s doing with Do512, too. The Web site is a crucial tool for going out in Austin. She knows her social media. I live by her tweets.”
Well, Kristin, your gracious gentleman spoke with me for hours, as we watched the burlesque show, greeted his many friends on the frozen Beauty Bar patio, then soaked up the music of the main act.
Coming from a family of longtime Texans, playing free safety for the Austin High Maroons, studying RTF at UT, working for MTV in New York, then studying for his graduate degree in accounting, Jeff Bevill brought a sackful of topics to the conversation. He never let the dialogue drop. Shy by nature, I appreciate that more than most readers know.
We talked Texas history, sports, theater, the necessity of living in New York for a while, the oddness of the masked ball, the aural blend of the orchestra, the lineage of variety, vaudeville and burlesque, and, of course, your good work.
Perhaps next time, it will be you, me, Kip and Jeff at a party. You would have loved the ball, by the way. Just your sort of thing.
Meanwhile, Kristin, good catch.
Michael
PS: I hope you don’t mind that I borrowed a picture of you and Jeff from your Facebook birthday party album. I figure it’s there to share.
