Wine Bars: Pre-Show Noshes, Part 7
Vino Vino
4119 Guadalupe St., 462-9282, www.vinovinotx.com
Our first response to Vino Vino: Just like Manhattan, but with three times the elbow room. Located on the edge of Hyde Park, it’s ideally located for the myriad of social events orbiting the University of Texas campus. It absolutely establishes Upper Guadalupe as a pre-show destination.Wine buyer Josh Loving recommends house-cured gravlax with dill oil and dill cream cheese, served with a baguette, for a quick bite.
“With it, I’d pair a current staff favorite white by the glass, Mas Cal Demoura “L’Etincelle”, 2005,” Loving says. “It’s a vin de pays de L’Herault from the Languedoc that is an unusual blend of five different grapes — Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Roussane, Viognier and Muscat. It has refreshing acidity and minerals that would cut the richness of the salmon, and a honeyed-herbal quality to compliment the dill oil and cream cheese.”

I had the pleasure of visiting Vino Vino a week or two ago and completely loved it! I met a few of my friends there for some good wine and light snacking. I like the whole concept of being able to pick your wine from right there along the wall. They have an amazing selection of wines for a very reasonable price and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We sampled a Ripasso, some sort of yummy French wine and a delicious Argentinian Malbec. We also purchased a couple of bottles to take home with us for later. We snacked on the cheese plate and a delicious housemade chicken pate that was to die for. It is not in my hood, but I will definitely be back.

Your description of Vino Vino, "just like Manhattan but with three times the elbow room," is clever. I know many places in Manhattan are very small, uncomfortably small, so it is a relief to know you can actually breathe in this bar. The comparison to Manhattan does, however, cast an 'upscale' aura, which I hope is intentional, especially with the later mention of gravlax (which I admit, I had to look up.) Posting Loving's comment also demonstrates the bar's credibility and was a good addition to the post.
