Those crazy Austinites
Overheard: On South Congress Avenue and Barton Springs Road, 1 p.m. Friday: “You live here? And you walk around? In long pants? In this heat? And those people over there jogging? They’re crazy. Crazy!”
Yes, real summer is finally here, four months late, with temperatures nudging the hundreds. Visitors are shocked and awed. Austinites usually respond to August in three ways: 1) Get in the water; 2) Stay inside; 3) Get out of town. I’ve done all three pretty regularly.
Nevertheless, Saturday, the streets were streaming with folks walking dogs, pushing strollers and just soaking up the sun after three months of rain. No matter that it’s hotter than Africa.
