TV: FX bet heavy on “Dirt” and won — at least at first glance. This new series about scandal mags sizzles. The writers sharpen their moral edge, but it cuts both ways. No slack for celebrities here.

Rick Fox (above) plays a compromised ball player. A running subplot about a mentally ill photographer is especially well exploited through hallucinatory special effects. Also, some sexual practices (including common marital aids) are given unprecedented screen time.
It’s the first series on my “keep” list this year. Go Courteney Cox!
Like “Nip/Tuck,” it’s a guilty pleasure.
