Oh, those Golden Globes

TV + Movies: So I’m not crazy for giving “Brokeback Mountain” five stars. At least according to the Hollywood Foreign Press, not always the best measure of achievement, but this time they made the right decision, announced last night at the glowing Golden Globe ceremony. I love the Globes. So silly. So messy. So fun. Plus, the voters are big on sentimental favorites, which is fine, because it’s not like they’re the Oscars, where it might count. The acceptence speeches are usually smart-ass (Steve Carell pretending his wife wrote his) or unhinged (fabulous Sandra Oh exhaling “Just look at all you people”). I haven’t seen “Walk the Line,” but I like all the artists involved. Individual winners such as Hugh Laurie, Felicity Huffman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, George Clooney and Rachel Weisz are personal favorites. Not having Showtime, I haven’t seen “Weeds,” but couldn’t be happier for loopy Mary-Louise Parker. Her show is no “West Wing,” but Geena Davis snaps me to attention every time she plays president, and she delivered one of the night’s best lines, a girl’s (fabricated) response to the White House role. “Lost” is the best TV drama, although attention must be paid to “Battlestar Galactica” in the future. And how about that S. Epatha Merkerson, after all those years of yoeman’s work on “Law and Order” sweeping up both an Emmy and and Globe for “Lackawanna Blues”? Makes you believe in late-career triumphs.
