Santigold to kick off SXSW Tuesday, The Low Anthem to play ACL Live

(Bret Gerbe FOR AMERICAN-STATESMAN)

As part of this year’s expanded Tuesday night Interactive Fest crossover events, Santigold, who destroyed a set at ACL Fest last fall, will play La Zona Rosa alongside Theophilus London and Curren$y.

Providence-based indie-folk act The Low Anthem is now on the schedule for Thursday night at ACL Live, one of the fest’s bigger venues, and a much-lauded room at that, which up to this point has only been booked for Friday night when amazingly coiffed Colombian superstar Juanes leads an excellent showcase that also features Bomba Estereo, The Magnetic Fields and The War On Drugs. Last year, Perez Hilton booked the venue for his ‘Night In Austin’ festivities on Saturday night.

Also absent are any listings for Stubb’s BBQ, although we know the NPR show with the Alabama Shakes, Andrew Bird and Sharon Van Etten will be there on Weds. night. The sizable, but acoustically abysmal Austin Music Hall is also off the grid aside from the annual Austin Music Awards ceremony/performance on Wednesday night. Bottom line: expect many more big announcements any minute now.

Nas, Skrillex playing SXSW Friday

Yes, it’s that time of year when new SXSW announcements seem to drop hourly. Today’s latest include announcements that Skrillex and friends will be at the Mohawk on Friday, March 16. We already knew Skrillex was likely to be at the MTVu Woodie Awards (where he is a leading nominee) which will film at a still-to-be-disclosed location in Austin on Thursday, March 15, so the announcement isn’t a huge surprise. For the record, The Black Keys, LCD Soundsystem, Matt & Kim, Eliza Doolittle, Wiz Khalifa and Local Natives are all also scheduled to attend and Frank Ocean is up for an award, so don’t be surprised if any of those folk start to trickle onto the official SXSW lineup or various side spectacles.

Also announced today legendary rhymeslinger Nas is now on the schedule at The Belmont on Friday. The venue, which closed unexpectedly last fall and is reopening just for the festival, will also host the Jesus and Mary Chain on Thursday.

UPDATE: This blog entry has been updated to clarify that Skrillex is likely to attend the the MTVu Woodie Awards and is not a scheduled performer.

British hard rock (goth? alternative?) lifers The Cult will make its 2012 live debut headlining the SXSW Auditorium Shores Stage on March 17.

(Nothing says St. Patrick’s Day like screaming along to “She Sells Sanctuary” and “Fire Woman.”)

The Auditorium Shores Stage shows are free and open to the public, and The Cult will takes the stage at 8 p.m.

The band’s new album “Choice of Weapon” (Cooking Vinyl), the band’s first new studio album in five years, is due out May 22.

Remember when the Cult played the Revolver SXSW party in 2001? We do.

No word yet on who else is playing the show. The Shins headline the March 15 concert in the park, while Counting Crows headline March 16 show.

Obama sings while Gary Clark Jr. plays

Check out our president in chief singing while Austin guitar hero Gary Clark Jr plays. It was all part of an all-star music event Tuesday night at the White House and also included B.B. King Jr., Mick Jagger, Trombone Shorty, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. “In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues” was a special Black History Month event that was recorded for PBS (KLRU has it listed at 11 p.m. Monday on the schedule).

Clark will be back in Austin for South by Southwest.

En Espana: “Into Your Ears” was recorded on vintage BBC/Abbey road sound recording equipment at the Circo Perrotti studio in Gijon, Spain.
