Weekend picks: Loretta Lynn, Good Field, Scott Kelly and Eugene Robinson
FRIDAY

Loretta Lynn at ACL Live. This show was originally scheduled for Sept. 22, 2011; it was moved so Lynn could have knee surgery. The 76-year-old Lynn has been in the music industry for 52 years and one of the most important singer-songwriters country music ever produced. Again: 76 years old, still touring. You should probably go. Doors at 6:30 p.m. $27.50 to $47.50. 310 W. Second St. acl-live.com — Joe Gross

SATURDAY
Good Field at Hole In the Wall.Originally the solo work of Paul Price (of Brazos), Good Field is now a four piece band consisting of Price, Esteban Cruz (Coma in Algiers), Michael McLeod and Kyle Robertson. From the opening of the band’s recently released EP, which begins midtempo drums, low key bass and soft acoustic guitar, one thing that comes to mind is California’s Laurel Canyon music scene of the 1970s, which was home to bands, including Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, that offered up folkie sounds with a sometimes dark underbelly. Elsewhere on the album the band veers a bit towards a more contemporary indie rock with sparse arrangements filled with fuzzy guitars and distant vocals. With Jack Wilson, Grace Park and the Dear, Darren Hoff and the Hard Times. 2538 Guadalupe St. holeinthewallaustin.com — Peter Mongillo
Also playing:
- Digital Leather, Dead Space, Brain Attack at Beerland
- Jucifer, Tia Carrera at the Mohawk
- Talking Heads Hoot Night with Moving Matter
- The Trim, Jabarvy at Antone’s
- Reed Turner at Lamberts
- Missions, A Sky Jet Black, Knifefight at The Swan Dive
- Wolfgang Gartner at La Zona Rosa

SUNDAY
Scott Kelly and Eugene Robinson at the Mohawk. Both of these fellows are better known as frontmen with big strapping rock bands than as sit-down singer-songwriter types, Kelly with the thunderous Neurosis, Robinson with the powerfully enigmatic Oxbow, yet here we are. High weirdness will likely ensue. With Ancient VVisdom. 10 p.m. $10 advance, $12 door. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com — J.G.
Also playing:
- Harp and Lyre, Set the Sun, A Fight For Life at the Parish
- Andy Grammer, Ryan Star at Stubb’s
- The Wolf, The Dirty Lungs at the Hole in the Wall

SXSW Band of the Day: Nneka
From: Warri, Nigeria
Online: facebook.com/NnekaWorld
In 50 words or fewer: Part of a new generation of African singers who rage against post-colonial injustice in their homelands, Nneka delivers a righteous soul smackdown. With indignation tempered by graceful humility and raw outrage softened by vulnerability, her songs ache with humanity, seethe with pure heart.
Could share a bill with: Erykah Badu, Dead Prez, Damian Marley, The Roots
Transcontinental: The daughter of a Nigerian father and a German mother, Nneka grew up in the troubled, oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Forced to flee as age 19, she relocated to Hamburg, Germany. She currently splits her time between Hamburg and Lagos, Nigeria, where she is very active in the Occupy Nigeria movement.
