New HD radio station debuts, featuring nothing but metal
Metalheads rejoice!
Folks with HD radios have a new station to check out that’s playing nothing but metal 24/7/365.
No Control Radio launched today on 107.1 FM HD2.
Owner Emmis Austin Radio claims the new signal, which is an expansion of the 11-year-old “No Control” program on 101X, is the nation’s only round-the-clock commercial metal station.
“The beauty of this new channel is that it’s local, it’s unafraid to play lots of hard-hitting metal; to promote the metal scene and to ignore everything else,” said Scott Gillmore, vice president and market manager for Emmis. “Lovingly put together by Chuck Loesch, No Control Radio is growing fast.”
Tune in to hear established bands such as Metallica, modern faves such as As I Lay Dying and new and unsigned talent.

Awesome! This will serve as a nice complement to Liquid Metal on Sirius.

And still…. the flagship station gets squat. The better rated KLBJ gets left on the back burner again.

TXn, HD receiver units are cheap, and it’s a one time fee, please don’t mislead people into thinking that this is a fee based service. HD radio is just a digital signal like the digital signals that replaced the old analog stations. Range is about the same but quality over that range is much better and less prone to signal degradation issues.

According to the poster named “dude” (who obviously works for a radio station): “Range is about the same but quality over that range is much better and less prone to signal degradation issues.”
The truth is that the range of an HD radio channel (other than the main FM channel) is MUCH LESS and it is MUCH MORE PRONE to “signal degradation issues.”
HD radio is all hype and a failed experiment no matter how much the radio big-shots try to push it on the public. The HD Channel 2 or 3 signal cuts in and out which is totally irritating.
I brought my HD radio back to Best Buy and got my money back.
Why not stream your heavy metal programming on the Internet — you’ll have a lot more listeners.

dude: i would beg to differ about the signal degradation issues. unlike FM radio, where you will hear a pop of static if you lose part of the signal, HD radio will completely cut out for a second or two if you lose part of the signal. i listened to HD radio for a little while and i found the constant audio loss to be annoying.
until the FCC allows HD radio signals to be broadcast at a higher power, i will probably not try it again.

Just to piggy back on By dude’s comment- HD Radio IS free. With a new radio, there are no fees. It’s just an upgraded version of your FREE radio. Radios can be only 50 bucks and the signal is free. 24/7 streams aren’t going to be as hot now that Verizon and AT&T both have cancelled unlimited plans. So, unless you want to be stuck to your computer all the time, radio is still the only free option. Thanks to Emmis for giving us something DIFFERENT to listen to!
