Cool gig alert: Sister Carol, Tidal Waves at Flamingo Cantina
Local lovers of conscious reggae are in luck. Saturday’s show at Flamingo features an excellent double bill of feel-good irie rhythms bolstered by vibrant social commentary. Headliner, Brooklyn-based singjay Sister Carol, who Austinites might know from her sizzling appearances with Thievery Corporation, is one of the predominant female voices in the genre. Her distinctive sound blends catchy grooves with sharp lyrical content covering everything from sexism to HIV awareness.
Meanwhile rasta outfit Tidal Waves hails from South Africa where the band has performed for Nelson Mandela and backed Ziggy Marley. And yes, they do in fact use a vuvuzela in their music, but only in the most charming way.
Doors open at 9 p.m. and tickets for the show will set you back $12.
