Scene report: getting inspired with Blacklisted Individuals
Da’Shade Moonbeam gets some kind of award for mixing the serious and the joyous Friday night during his set at The Marq. Part of a quick-turnover rap bill - each act got 25 minutes at the most - Moonbeam/Blacklisted Individuals wrung every bit of energy and passion possible from such a brief appearance.
The apex came about 15 minutes in when he launched into “Let This Be The Beginning,” a three-minute spoken word plea for open-mindedness and compassion across racial and class lines that he later said was inspired by a similar speech in the movie “The Warriors.”
You could hear a pin drop for a beat after he finished, and went right into an all-out party track that let a pair of b-boy breakdancers and two fly-girl dancers clear out space in the audience and whip the crowd into a frenzy. It was a moment, and the type of unhinged showmanship that visitors to SXSW go home telling their friends and associates about.

Excellent show by a lyricist/performer with superior talent. Thank you for the accurate synopsis; hopefully, Da’Shade/Blacklisted Individuals will play a longer set. (The fly-girls were his sisters!)
