Scene report: Wanda Jackson at Jo’s/South By San Jose

“Regal” isn’t a word that gets thrown around a lot during SXSW, what with the bulk of attendees and artists sporting four-day growths and three days of walking around grime by the time the festival officially starts.

But Wanda Jackson was regal Thursday night on the stage in the back of Jo’s on South Congress. Filling in for the canceled World Party, the rockabilly legend pattered out after the backing band she’s used for years for her annual stops at the Continental Club, every hair perfect, her clothes pristine and jewelry sparkling as the packed-in crowd - a good many of them hoping to catch a Jack White drop in - showered her with adoration.

At 73 years old Jackson obviously doesn’t have the pipes to knock an audience over in such a big setting, so she chose her spots and let her aged feistiness shine through on songs from the new “The Party Ain’t Over,” such as “Shakin’ All Over,” and Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good.”

Much as the crowd enjoyed and respected Jackson, the ranks started to thin about 30 minutes in when it became apparent White - who made Jackson his latest old-time country reclamation project - wasn’t going to make another surprise appearance. Gotta give the guy credit, though. As a marketer his series of buzzed-about pop up shows through the week helped draw a thick crowd to see Jackson and probably sell a couple hundred extra copies of the new record in the process.
