Scene report: crippling ’80s flash back @ Ginger Man

Unbeatable lineup Friday afternoon for people of a certain vintage pining for their college days: the Fleshtones, Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3, Baseball Project (with folks from REM, Young Fresh Fellows and Dream Syndicate), then at 6:30’ Mike Watt.

The Fleshtones about 4 finished a set that will be talked about for some time.

“It’s like CBGB’s in ‘79’,” said Russell Brooks of Parralex Project from Harrisburg, Pa. “Wherever, they go, they have not changed.”

“They taught me an unbelievable amount about what rock ‘n’ roll is, and always should be,” said Mike Giblin, also from Harrisburg. “Every night was a whole new universe.”

Guitarist Keith Streng rocked a pair of pointy silver shoes and possibly the oldest functioning amp in Austin this week, while Peter Zaremba remains possibly the hardest-working (living) man in show business. There was walking on tables, there was a guy doing push-ups. It. Was. A. Show.

Wynn on now, reportedly Mike Mills and Peter Buck on with Baseball Project in a bit. Feels like sophomore year.

UPDATE: Wynn playing “Tell Me When It’s Over” with Peter Buck right now.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: Michael Stipe showed up later and chatted with Buck. Bassist Mike Mills reportedly in town. Stipe spent much of the night standing on the Ginger Man’s roof watching his sister’s band. They have a record just out; they gotta be playing somewhere, right?
