Bucky Godbolt heading back to 1300 the Zone

godbolt.JPG

After an absence of almost three years, Bucky Godbolt is heading back to sports talk station 1300 the Zone.

Godbolt, who has been co-hosting the morning show on KVET alongside veteran broadcaster Bob Cole, announced his impending departure this morning.

“The Zone needs me,” he told listeners. “That’s where my strengths are.”

At the Zone, Godbolt will revive his “Buck on Sports” program, which will air from 6 to 9 a.m. starting Monday, replacing “Wake-Up Call.” He’ll also briefly pop in on KVET’s morning show weekdays at 7:30 a.m.

Both KVET and the Zone are owned by San Antonio-based Clear Channel.

Godbolt’s move is one of several changes at KVET in recent months. Other departures include program director and operations manager Mac Daniels, meteorologist Troy Kimmel and “Saturday Gold” host Tom Allen.

I miss Bucky with E Hogan!

By Well since the Bucky and Bob show is a literal shell of its former self, the move may be great for B

I have given up on the 98.1 morning show since they have gone to a more music format during the 7AM hour. Too bad as Bob really had an amazing grasp of goings on in Austin Texas. Now, one might as well be listening to KASE.

KLBJ 590 has my attention and my dial now that KVET has gone south.

The show has gone downhill since Sammy was fired. A huge drop immediately and a continued downward spiral. The team was best with Michelle, Troy, Sammy, Eric and a little of Bob. It is easy to get too much of Bob.
Give David a full time mike and bring back Troy. Since Troy has left KVET, KASE is actually better.

Clear Channel obviously doesn’t have the foggiest idea what to do with KVET. If “The Horn” (KTXX 104.9) could get its signal problems ironed out, there wouldn’t be five people still listening to 1300.

And trashing the morning show over on 98.1 with all that music just confirms the incompetence of CC when it comes to programming Austin.

Just a comment from a non yappy show in the morning person. Change the format to all gold country and play music in the morning. I keep listening for music in the morning and what you get in Austin is The Drivil and Yap Show.

All of these commenters sound like conservative shut-in’s who do nothing but sit home and listen to talk radio.

The fact is that on the few occasions I’ve caught KVET FM in the past few months, Bucky (with sports as his strength) has never been a good fit. It’s been downright painful to listen to a bunch of rightwing conservatives like Bob Cole and the weatherman Troy Kimmel spew gibberish while Bucky mostly sits there in stone cold silence. Last January, for instance, Cole and Kimmel were talking about President Obama. Kimmel opined at one point that health care reform has been “a failure, like everything else he’s done.” Throughout the whole conversation, Godbolt was silent.

Kimmel and Cole are certainly welcome to their opinions, and to expressing them, but let’s remember that the conservative politics these guys (and their listeners) espouse is very much the minority view around here. In 2006, Rick Perry got just 26% of the vote in Travis County. When Kay Hutchison was reelected to the U.S. senate that year, she got just 42% in Travis County. When John Cornyn last ran for U.S. senate, in 2008, he got just 37%. Oh, and McCain-Palin? They got just 34% in Travis County, while Obama took over 60%.

Bucky should be glad to be headed back to the AM side.

This is bad- Bob is good for Austin. If they want to finish the show off, bring in Troy Kimmel as a replacment- he obviously wanted Bucky’s job. That will assure that the show fails, with his negativity spewing- “butt ins”. This did not have to happen.

I have left the KVET morning show and gone to 590AM, listening to current events with Bob was the morning show. The music format who thought that was a good idea? maybe that person should be shown the door . Bring back the Talk of Austin and people will come back. Hell if you want to listen to music go to KASE…

KVET’s lead-ins make it sound like any other radio station in the country. How unfortunate that Clear Channel has taken a station that was set apart from others and made it just another “country” station. Thank goodness Kimmel is gone but I thought Bucky & Bob added a lot to the program. And what about Big Frank?

I hear that Sammy Allred is back on the air once a week on a station in Dripping Springs KDRP 103.1fm Radio.

What a mess. I understood why they had to let Sammy go. We didn’t like Bucky at first but grew to accept him. Then they cut Tom Allen and Troy the Angry Weatherman? The “more music” format sucks, as evidenced in their dramatic plunge to the bottom of the ratings.

This morning, it sounded like Bob wasn’t sure if he (or Eric) was going to be able to stay. Good job, Clear Channel! Force a good thing into the ground and to the bottom of the morning shows.

We will miss you…

Tuning in to KVET 98.1 has been the first action in my morning wake-up ritual for years - through Sam & Bob to Bob & Bucky. I have really, really enjoy Bob & Bucky, cranky Troy and all of the morning “call in talk show”. It has been my main source of information for what is going on in Austin in politics, entertainment, etc. The guests have always been spectacular, be it Kevin Fowler, Jason the Lawyer or Chief Acevedo. Why on earth has clear channel felt the need to “fix” something that wasn’t broken?! I listen to 98.1 most of the day, getting all of the music I want. Between the time I arise and 10 am, I want to hear Bob and Bucky, I want to hear what the caller’s have to say. I don’t want to listen to music! I am sad that clear channel is killing the best morning radio show in Austin. Shame on them!

KVET has become way too conservative for Austin. I miss Tom Allen and classic country.

The Talk of Austin has been part of my morning routine for over 15 years. It is such a shame to see Clear Channel destroy a great show and such a community service. The show was my insight into many of the things going on in Austin from politics, education, music, sports, etc. I have quit listening and trying to adjust to 590am but it is just not the same. It is so unfortunate to have such a wonderful personality as Bob Cole reduced to introducing a song every now and then. At this point I guess I am hoping Bob will be let go as well and he will be hired by a brilliant program director at another local channel who has his ear to Austin and the show can be revived.

Now I understand they are interviewing for a new deejay to partner with Bob.What do they did another deejay for - the personalities on the show have been reduced to nothing but introducing song after song! It is such a shame that “The Talk of Austin” has been axed by company officials who obviously are totally out of touch with Austin. Not only was “The Talk of Austin” entertaining with a huge following, it was informative covering a wide range of topics, and it provided an excellent community service. I realized last week when we were dealing with a deep freeze and power issue problems how much I missed KVET. I had come to rely on them for all the latest information about what was going on in our city.
I too have left the channel, I am not interested in listening to country music all morning. I have wondered if CC will keep Bob Cole. Maybe the best thing that could happen would be for CC to let Bob go and a smart producer in Austin would snatch him up and bring back “The Talk of Austin”. The program certainly has a built in audience who would be thrilled to change the dial.

I think the ratings say it all. The Country Gold Show, the Morning Talk Show, Troy (yes, even his strong opinions) just show that someone in the upper ranks have destroyed one of Austin’s greatest icons in the music world. Good luck Bob. I’m sure they’ll feel you’re not needed before long.

I loved the show with Sam, Bob, and Troy — really unhappy with the mostly music hour. Bucky got better but too much messing around with the format. Find a real Austin partner for Bob, bring back TROY and continue to let Eric be a part of things. I may have to listen to WOAI, can’t handle Mark, Ed and Sam in the morning.

At KVET 98.1 the only remaining programs worth listening to are Saturday morning “Country Gold”, Sunday morning “Gospel Show”…….and or course UT sports with the great Craig Way (Super Orangeblood)!!!

My wife and I retired from the coast and moved to the Hill country 4 years ago. We started listening to KVET 98.1 and fell in love with the crew on the morning show. It’s ashame that what we felt was the best station on the radio has changed so much so quickly. We will deeply miss Bucky and Troy and hope to find another station as good as KVET 98.1 .
