2011 in Austin music: one thing and nine crazy predictions

First prediction: KUT will start a new nationally syndicated show “Live From the Cactus Cafe” with Jody Denberg as the host.

2. Fun Fun Fun Fest will not move to Auditorium Shores as expected, but to East Austin, where they’ll put a fence around Pine Street Station (the Fader Fort during SXSW) and the East Side Drive In on the next block.

3. Austin City Limits Live at Moody Theater will be a game-changer, even inspiring Stubb’s to finally break ground on their refigured, 4,000-capacity amphitheater, with a stage facing southwest (the homeless shelter.).

4. The Eli Young Band will learn the words to the National Anthem.

5. Suzanna Choffel will have a big year. Ume, too. Both will break Margaret Moser’s habit of writing only about acts under 21 or over 60 in the Austin Chronicle.

6. C3 will finally get Radiohead as a headliner. (Maybe these predictions aren’t so crazy, but this bit will hopefully get lots of hits online from Kirk Bohls readers not paying attention.).

7. New country music nightclub the Stage on Sixth Street will start hosting live music in the afternoon, just as they do at their downtown Nashville location. But it won’t work on Sixth Street because tourists don’t go there during the day except to score drugs.

8. South by Southwest will buy a struggling nightclub, which they’ll hire Paul Oveisi and Frank Hendrix to run.

9. C3 Presents will significantly restrict the areas in which fans are allowed to set up chairs at ACL Fest. Either that or ban them entirely as a crowd safety issue.

The one thing we can count on is that jazz singer Kat Edmonson will sign a record deal and appear on “The Tonight Show” without Lyle Lovett. First, she’s gotta finish her album and get management, but Edmonson is a can’t miss prospect.

Cheap shot about Margaret Moser. Totally unnecessary and amateurish.

Austin jazz fans will be blown away by the high-energy, tight-ensemble, hard-swinging early jazz sounds of the Jim Cullum Jazz Band (and their Austin musician jam buddies) at their unprecedented no-cover gig at Annies Cafe & Bar Jan. 20 & 27, Feb. 3 & 17. How’s that for a 2011 music prediction.
