No more Troy Kimmel weather updates on KASE, KVET
The changes keep on coming at country radio siblings KASE and KVET, where meteorologist Troy Kimmel is off the air after a run of more than 13 years.
A victim of budget cuts, his departure comes just weeks after Tom Allen ended his “Country Gold” hosting duties at KVET. Operations manager/program director Mac Daniels also exited the Clear Channel-owned stations recently.
In addition to forecasting the weather on air and online, Kimmel was a regular on KVET’s “Bucky and Bob: the Talk of Austin,” featuring hosts Bucky Godbolt and Bob Cole.
“I’m going to miss all the people there, especially Bucky and Bob,” Kimmel said. “They’re my buds and pals.”
Kimmel remains chief meteorologist at KEYE, Austin’s CBS affiliate, where he can be seen weeknights at 4, 6 and 10 p.m. He’s also a senior lecturer and manages the Weather and Climate Resource Center at the University of Texas. And he runs KimCo Meteorological Services. With so much else on his plate, the well-known weatherman says he’s not actively looking for a new radio gig.
“I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have 13 — almost 14 — years on the radio with Clear Channel,” Kimmel said. “They’re a good company.”

Thanks for confirming what I suspected this morning when Bob kept going on and on reading the weather forecast and never mentioned why Troy was not on the line as usual. “The Talk of the Town” has deteriorated into almost no talk and way too much repetitive country music for mornings. I do listen during the day when I’m in the car so it’s not that I don’t like their variety of country music, it’s just that I liked their previous morning format of chit-chat and guests.

Unfortunately, with program management changes come program changes. And, they’re not always for the better. K-VET has been a very unique radio station in Austin for years. That uniqueness is being sacrificed in the name of (hopefully) higher ratings. Only time will tell if it works. My guess is, it won’t.

I like Bucky and Bob but I still miss Sammy too. Troy is a good meteorologist but I found his opinions and comments to be far right with no empathy for any other point of view.

I have listened to KVET since early 70s when Bob Cole left KOKE. The morning show with Bob & Bucky has been ruined by too much music & the show is not enjoyable like it use to be. In talking to someone with Clear Channel I was told they did a survey which concluded by “whoever” that more music is wanted. Well they didn’t survey me. And Clear Channel really blew it when they told Tom Allen not to play anything older than 1970 on his Country “Gold” show. Give us a break Clear Channel; you lost the best show you had when you ran off Tom Allen. And Big Frank is a joke; he’s not even in Austin; he’s in Corpus. Clear Channel, you have lost lots & lots of long time listeners & you should take a survey to find that out. Watch out listeners as it won’t be long till Bob & Bucky are gone. Turns out the DJs aren’t even doing their shows live. They pre-record them. Clear Channel, you have really blown it here in Austin. Before long you will go bankrupt as you are running off listeners.

The changes at KVET have lost me as a listener. Troy leaving pretty much sealed the deal. Too much music, not enough talk and they completely dropped taking phone calls. I liked Troy immensely and really enjoyed his polticially tinged commentary. I know some folks didn’t appreciate his poltical stance but so what?……..We live in a free country and you can have your opinion. I”ll drop KVET from my morning ritual and go back to 1300 so I can listen to Bucky on “The Buck on Sports”………..that is where he should have always been. So long, KVET!!!

I agree with Nancy. The changes are not good. i am a long time listener of the station, but the changes are driving me away from all there programming, and now that the end of the Bucky and Bob show was announced today, I have no more reason to listen to them at all. They might as well do away with the station as it’s no different than KASE now.

I am in agreement with most all of the above. I listened to KVET every morning driving to work and so enjoyed Troy, Bob, Bucky and all. What made KVET great was that it was different. I can get music on any channel. I really miss my visit with the KVET bunch every morning now. Please KVET go back to what you had. Why fix something that’s not broken!!!

“DF” above got it right: KVET is now really no different than KASE. I understand that the suits at Clear Channel have to make a buck, but assuming that there’s a large enough audience to support that many stations playing mostly the same thing is just ridiculous. KVET has always succeeded precisely because it was unique and did not do what every other station in America did. Until recently, management understood that. It’s almost criminal, and definitely sad, to see what’s happened to the station in the past year or two.

I am no longer a fan of the morning show either. Too much music. I switch stations when the music comes on and check back for talk and then listen. Not a big fan of Bucky on the show. He was too awkward and couldn’t keep up the wit and conversation with Bob. Maybe that is why so much music. Maybe Bob will get a more talk savy partner so they can go back to talking. I really like Eric. Maybe he will step in. Hope it gets better or I may stop listening altogether. Can we get our opinions to Clear Channel???

Losing Sammy was a major blow, but Bucky slowly grew on me. Now to lose Bucky, Troy AND Tom Allen is too much. Time to find a new morning show

First Sammy, then less talk, Now that they have zapped the Country Gold with Tom Allen, deleted the Bucky and Bob talk show, and ousted Troy Kimmel about the only thing left is the Sunday Morning Gospel and I guess that will be next.
KVET used to be different from all the rest and the programming was great. Now it is just another drone.
Guess I’ll just move on over to the San Antonio Talk station KTSA even if all of their programming is one sided.and overly opinionated.

For me first was Sammy, I to, got used to Bucky. next for me was what ever started hapening at night, I did not think it was much Country. NOw I agree with most of what as been said. I can only hope that this search for a new person works out and we get back to old times. What does it take to get the decision makers to listen. We listen to 101 at night, all night asleep or not, and I tune in the AM and now am disappointed most of the time. After the morning show I would prioratize my wants first the morning talk show aka 1 year ago, 2nd Gospen show on Sunday morning and then the Country Gold. Somebody listen. I don’t see any commemts that people like what is happening.

I am a retired High School teacher and coach. I just found out about Troy being out at KVET. I really do enjoy listening to Bob Cole but Bucky and Troy complimented Bob and made for a fun, interesting morning show that everyone that I know really enjoyed and talked about. My former coaching buddies all enjoyed and talked about the KVET morning show as much as the rest of the above commenting people. Eric Raines and David Anderson are also awesome on the show. The morning show with its character was like a team. Everyone had his role and was very instrumental to the success of the morning show. Are David and Eric next. Your CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM is GONE!!! The Genuine Austin Original is no longer original. Clear Channel has made a big mistake in my opinion and I will be looking for another channel. I hope that Bob Cole . takes a stand based on principal and looks for something different.

I;ve never commented about a show before - never really cared. Don’t particularly mind losing Bucky but strangely enough, although I disagreed with most of his political views, I do mind losing Troy. I also mind the inclusion of more music. - which is also strange since I grew tired of the Good Ole Boys locker room humor - but I enjoyed the (sometimes) witty repartee…..Maybe you should lose the country all together. Too many country stations in Austin. If you’re going to change just go all the way

I miss the combination of Bob, Bucky, Troy and Eric. I tuned in for the talk and an occasional song. Now it is way too much music and not enough talk. The content was really good until these changes. I like David on the show too. I can’t help but wonder if Bob is next on their hit list. Who is the idiot who thought up this competition for a new co-host? I wish Bucky and Troy well, great guys. I hope I don’t end up having to wish Bob well too.
By the way I did not appreciate Clear Channel selling The River 105.9. the new Spirit is not near as good.

If KVET’s mission is to LOSE LISTENERS, then they are doing an excellent job. I remember KVET with Bill Hecke doing the forecast, then Troy Kimmel took over. I have met Troy in person at Skywarn. I used to listen to KVET Country Gold at lunch. Not only am I not listening to KVET any more, I’m boycotting ALL Clear Channel stations. Even if that means playing my CDs instead of radio. I can get the weather from the Weather Channel (or does Clear Channel now own that too?)

I used to tune in to Bucky & Bob every morning, and it was the only KVET show I listened to except the Sunday Gospel Show. But I have mostly stopped listening since the talk format changed. Too much music! The fun was in listening to Bob, Troy, David, Eric, and Bucky, and all the call-in folks, and now that’s gone. So sad that now Troy is leaving; he was great. Bring back the old format, please!

So glad to find these comments. A couple of months back I wrote to the program director and Troy to find our what was happening. I thought I was the only one who missed the show. Hopefully, the people who make the decisions will listen to these suggestions.

Changes aren’t always good. In fact, these changes stink! Ruined a great radio segment when they got rid of Bucky & Troy, not to mention Tom Allen’s Country Gold! Wake up & bring it back to the way it was.

Good job KVET. Troy is an obnoxious know-it-all jerk that ruined his own career there by being himself. He’ll rot in hell along with the rest of the racist Tea Bags. I’d like to put my foot dead in his @$$.

Sammy was the reason I had for the most part stopped listening. I used to look forward to hearing Tom on Saturday mornings. Now Tom……… Not sure what is in the cards for Bob now. I have worked with David the last 10 years and if anyone can save KVET it will be him.

Do they even still call it The Talk of Austin? You know, since Bob hardly says anything anymore because they’re playing music all morning when they need to be letting Bob do what he does best; talk to all of us. They’ve got two CMA Awards for having a great morning talk radio show (one with Sam & Bob, the other with Bucky & Bob), yet Clear Channel goes and changes the format… anyhow, they’ve lost me as a listener and I enjoyed them for 11 years. Now all they have to do to ice the cake of KVET’s death is to switch to that “new country” rubbish that’s much more pop than country. Shame on you, Clear Channel.
