Live country music coming to Sixth Street
Nashville’s live country music venue, The Stage on Broadway, is opening a sister club in Austin, it was announced Tuesday. The Stage on Sixth will open at 508 E. Sixth St. on New Year’s Eve.
Brooks & Dunn, Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean are a few of the acts that have performed at the Nashville club, which has long featured a “Texas Night” as a showcase for such acts Pat Green and Jason Boland. The Austin offshoot is expected to have a similar musical format.
“Having The Stage in Austin will add to the live music mix on 6th Street,” Molly Alexander of the Downtown Austin Alliance said in a press release, ” We are thrilled to have a true honky tonk, featuring Country and Western music, finally back in the mix.”
Sixth Street was previously home to country clubs the Hang ‘Em High Saloon (at the current location of Buffalo Billiards) and Raven’s (currently Emo’s), but neither lasted too long amid the thumping dance music clubs.
What the Stage on Sixth will have is experience at producing a winning format in a downtown setting. “We hope to bring a little bit of Nashville to the vibrant Austin music scene, while opening up more opportunities for Austin’s up and coming new artists to have a place to showcase their talent,” said Ruble Sanderson, who co-owns the club with wife Brenda and son Brad.
Brandon Reineke of Houston will be The Stage on Sixth’s general manager.
The 508 E. Sixth St. location, the former home to Fat Tuesday, the Vibe and Bourbon Rocks, has been closed for two years, except during the four days of SXSW..

Bad idea, plain and simple. Another of the 1,000 cuts that, little by little, lead, ultimately, to the end of a good thing.

Doesn’t sound like real country to me…About what you’d expect from a joint run outta Nash-Vegas.

Ms. Alexander has obviously never been in a real ***** tonk. At least if Nashville is bringing that candy-coated so-called country to Austin it will be on Sixth St. where few real country fans would venture. Still, I hope they are successful, people need the work.

While I am glad to see a new place go in on E 6th that will be offering lots of work and $ for lots of musicians in town I really hope they don’t bring their Nashville style country music with them. I do enjoy country, but Austin has its own flavor and I hope it is showcased here rather than your typical Nashville crap.

My name is Robert and I manage Triana. She has been in the Austin music scene since the early 80’s performing all types of music to include, swing, jazz, English and latin american standards, as well as her own original music. She was one of the first, if not, the first female singer to bring Salsa to Austin playing at a club called Club Islas. The name of the band was called Latin Tempo, now the club is called the Copa. She now performs every Sunday at Dulces Mexican Restaurant at Lakeline mall, when they have their buffet from 11am till 3pm. Great Food and music. Come out and listen to one of Austins well kept secrets. Thank you.
