Weekend picks: Epic shredding, Afro-beat soul and all that rocks
FRIDAY
Aasim Syed’s birthday party with Manikin, Follow That Bird, Glorium, the Golden Boys, DJ Butcher Bear and others at the Mohawk. He takes photos. He gets around. But most importantly, local music scenester Aasim Syed knows how to throw an awesome party. Last year’s birthday party for Syed, a two-stage shindig at the Mohawk, was a fine encapsulation of all that rocks in local music, and this year is no different. From the oft-trumpet-enriched, charging, colorful rock of Manikin to the catchy fury of Follow That Bird, it packs a lineup that should elicit a Pavlovian drool among Austin music fans. 8 p.m. $10. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. — Patrick Caldwell

SATURDAY
The Budos Band at the Mohawk.Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings may be the MVP for Brooklyn’s Daptone Records, the analog-minded home for old-school soul and funk, but the Budos Band can hold their own as one of the label’s most exciting commodities. A dozen expert musicians strong, the Budos Band splices funk and soul with ’70s Afro-beat for an instrumental, jazzy, electrifying good time — and never more so than on this year’s ‘The Budos Band III,’ their third record since their 2005 debut and their strongest yet. With Ocote Soul Sounds. 9 p.m. $12. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. —P.C.

SUNDAY
Asia at the Paramount Theatre. The lengthy and winding history of Asia is slightly less accessible for newcomers than the ‘Lost’ finale, but the important thing is this: The four-person Asia lineup that will take the stage at the Paramount is the real McCoy that practically defined the word ‘supergroup’ back in 1981. The quartet includes members of Yes, Roxy Music, King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer — and sold more than four million copies of its self-titled 1982 debut. Come to hear ‘Heat of the Moment.’ Stay for material from this year’s ‘Omega’ and Steve Howe’s epic shredding. 7:30 p.m. $31-$67. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.C.
