Day for Night: late parties break SXSW rules

When acts sign a contract to play SXSW, they agree to not play any other shows that compete with official SXSW showcases from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. But several official acts, including Band of Skulls, Drink Up Buttercup and Movits are scheduled to play unsanctioned shows during those hours.

SXSW managing director Roland Swenson says acts who plan to violate the agreement will be contacted and told to choose between the nighttime parties and their showcases.

This puts the lineup of the WOXY/ Future Sounds Super Rumble, Wednesday night at Shangri-La (1016 E. Sixth St.) in jeopardy. Currently on the sked, which has yet to be released to the public, are the super-buzzy Band of Skulls, Jaguar Love and Phantogram- all between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Band of Skulls’ two official SXSW showcases are Friday: 8 p.m. at the Beauty Bar/ Palm Door and 1 a.m. at Maggie Mae’s.

Los Angeles-based Future Sounds, which owns WOXY and booked the shows, has three daytime parties at Shangri-La to which you can RSVP here.. But the Wednesday night kickoff Rumble isn’t mentioned.

“We personally haven’t been contacted (by SXSW),” said WOXY’s Paige Maguire, “but we would encourage the bands to decide what’s best for them” in choosing the Super Rumble or their official showcase.

Check out the Showlist Austin blog for a list of nighttime parties; you can be sure SXSW organizers are.
