Texas Exes miss the point?
The Texas Exes alumni group has apparently met with University of Texas president Bill Powers to offer to move the Cactus Cafe to the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center on the UT campus.
Here’s a link to the story on the Texas Exes Web site.
Many might say this is a bad idea because the worst thing about the Cactus is that it’s on campus and because of that there’s no parking for fans. The best thing about the Cactus is that the room is perfect for intimate, acoustic shows. Plus there’s all that history.

The alumni center on campus has its own underground parking garage, and it’s within short walking distance two UT garages. If the Cactus Cafe were to move to the alumni center, it would be incorporated into the building’s planned expansion, so it could be as intimate as fans and alumni want. The point is: it won’t survive in the Union. It could survive at the alumni center.

How is this a bad idea? To preserve the integrity of the Cactus Cafe as an institution when the University is nearly unwavering in its position to remove the venue altogether is a step in the right direction. Since leaving it “where it is” is not currently an option on the table (although this might change after the town hall meeting today at 4 PM), so any productive and viable alternatives need not be shot down before seeing the light of day.

It’s not the Cactus Cafe anymore if you move it. I would love to see a Cactus Cafe II sprout up, but it ain’t gonna be the Cactus — and we should still KEEP the Cactus Cafe. This is so depressing that they are even THINKING of closing it. SHOCKING and DEMORALIZING.

The alumni center is a horrible idea - it won’t have the same acoustics and atmosphere.
Parking is bad on the drag, but way worse at the Alumni center.

Misses the point completely. This is not a campaign to save the Cactus Cafe Sign, it’s to save the Cactus Cafe.

This makes me think less of University of Texas degrees.
