New Backyard venue to host Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July picnic

The red-headed stranger will bring his famed Fourth of July picnic to the new Backyard venue, he announced during Tuesday night’s show at the Austin Music Hall. Nelson was the last performer to play the Backyard’s original location, in October 2008. The 2010 picnic marks a return to Central Texas for the beloved event. Last July, Nelson was on tour with Bob Dylan and John Mellencamp.

The Backyard is currently expected to reopen in its new location, on Bee Cave Parkway near the Hill Country Galleria, in the spring. The City of Bee Cave City Council approved the site plan Dec. 8.

Correction: The post originally stated that Nelson’s Four of July picnic was in Fort Worth this year. Nelson played alongside Bob Dylan and John Mellencamp at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend, Indiana on July 4, 2009.

Please learn from the mistakes of the Austin Music Hall and don’t build the new Backyard venue with a shortage of bathrooms and poor acoustics! The Direct Events brand name is suffering from the shortcomings of the Music Hall.

Well Bee Cave resident’s, what does the construction look like?

Like a new WalMart or Ikea are being SQUEEZED in or is it more of a NATURE theme like the old one???

You can’t even see the area from the road and I get the sense that it is going to be part of the park surrounded by trees. It should have the feel of the old venue from my (brief) observations so far.

Willie’s picnic in 2009 was held somewhere in Indiana I believe while he was on tour with Bob Dylan (not in Fort Worth). It was in Selma, TX in 2008.

Glad to know that Willie will bring it to Austin in 2010. Hope the new Backyard will be big enough to host the event. It’s always a big turnout.

I work near the new location, and from what I’ve seen so far, the New Backyard should be great! They did keep the ‘nature’ theme of the old location and are going one better by moving trees vs. destroying them and using a lot of green products for construction. And besides Willie, they’re having a grand opening of sorts, with musicians and everything, in May. I’m definitely going to check it out!
