Jody Denberg to leave KGSR after 19 years
Content manager and on-air host Jody Denberg will leave KGSR FM after 19 years, Emmis Austin Radio announced today.
Denberg, who is on the air weekdays from 1 to 6 p.m. and who also hosts a popular Sunday morning show, will stay on until at least early December, the station said.
“I have promised myself one year without doing any work,” Denberg said in a statement. “The time is right for me to take some time off and recharge my creative batteries.”
Before coming to KGSR when the station launched in 1990, Denberg spent 10 years on the air at KLBJ FM, also an Emmis station, the statement said.
“Jody’s … passion and talent have been instrumental in the station’s ongoing success,” said Scott Gillmore, Emmis vice president and market manager.
No decision has been made for Denberg’s replacement, the statement said.

Some much deserved rest. We often take for granted when we have it so good, and Jody’s been so good for so long it’s easy to forget how long Jody’s been on the air since almost forever.
Go get some rest, Jody. I’m sure your next venture will be interesting and fun!

Bummer, but I’m glad Mr. Denberg is doing what makes him happy. I had a beef with an on-air comment he made years ago, and he was not only responsive to my concerns, but also just an all-around helluva guy. I had heard as much through the grapevine, but now I can say it is indeed true. Good luck, Jody!

I never pay attention to the names of the DJ’s or voices on KGSR but it is by far the best station in Austin and this guy must be one of the main reasons why. Hope the format and station style and personality don’t change. Good luck getting you head back fella…know how you feel.

Sad sad news. I don’t think we understand Jody’s impact on the Live Music ecosystem that makes Austin so unique. He is a unique cog in the machine that allows artists in Austin to carve out a livelihood here. KGSR (Jody) - Waterloo Records - the Venues: they are a virtuous circle of creativity that fuels Austin music. This is very bad news for Austin.

OK…Here’s the bad about this: Jody is fantastic. He knows music. He has a definite position. And he’s passionate about music and Austin. What’s good about this? Very little. Except that Andy Langer (who some previous responders obviously don’t like) has changed KGSR for the better — big time. Instead of waiting for Patty Griffin’s gospel CD, they are playing Phoenix. And MGMT. I’m not saying losing Jody is good. It’s not. It sucks. Big time. But the future is bright for KGSR. Hopefully for Jody, too. We’ll miss him.

I really hate to hear it. Jody is my favorite DJ, not just in Austin or Texas. His amazing passion and knowledge of music is a treasure to find on the airwaves. It doesn’t seem like “just a job” to him, especially when he has a conversation with Andy Langer. It’s like listening to a music historian(Jody) talking to a preschooler (Andy). It might be Jody’s idea to leave and I wish him well, but I will honestly miss his insight. If Andy was leaving, he wouldn’t be missed, but Jody’s absence will leave a major void. Jody is what makes KGSR so special.

Ever notice how often he says “uh”? Drives me, uh, crazy. I guess I’d better load up my ipod and get ready for December! Sad to see Jody departing the station of which he was clearly the heart, soul and spiritual essence. Jody is the unofficial Don of Austin’s Granola Mafia, and his departure leaves a gigantic black hole at KGSR. When Emmis (based in Indianapolis) purchased KGSR from Lady Bird several years ago, this was the precise inevitability many of us foresaw… out with the good DJs and now we’re left with…?

I had friends move down from Denver and they listen to this station. After a short listen I realized that the entire station could both suck and blow at the same time. Austin radio stations are the worst in the country. Live Music Capital of the world? My arse….. Maybe this guy ran out of boring ideas and needs to steal ideas from stations across the country. Don’t come back if you are going to keep the same BS playing, creativity more like boring outdated monotony.

As a programmer, I’ve known Jody for most of his tenure at KGSR. I’ve seen how this business can sap a person of his passion and energy for the medium. Nearly 30 years on the air in one market would surely take its toll. One can’t really predict what his departure means to the future of the station, but, for what it’s worth, Emmis is one of the more product friendly companies out there. So we can only hope for the best. Enjoy the next year, Jody. See you when your return. Oh, and David, you’re an idiot.

It is a sad, sad day for Austin Music.
I remember when the station switched from cool Jazz to this “format”, which at the time was NOT a format. I remember going to Sholtz’s Garden for one of the first get togethers for fans and telling Susan Castle that their bumper sticker was the first and only I’d ever put on my car, and I displayed it with great pride.
I cannot even begin to think of all the music that I’d have missed were it not for Jody and Susan giving it a voice on KGSR, and I’m eternally grateful for all of that and his support in the Music Community.
I hope this is his decision, not rammed down by Emmis. My fears when the station was sold by Scott are finally materializing. I know it’s a business, but KGSR was so much more, and with the departures of Kevin Connor, Bobby Ray and Susan Castle, it’s not the same, nor will it ever be.
But then, neither is anything else in the world.
Good Luck, Jody and thanks.

Yep between Susan and Jody leaving so close together-the station will not be the same! Bryan has alot on his shoulders now-Andy Langer needs to go or stop yapping! People who haven’t lived in Austin very long don’t know how much of an impact Jody has had in our radio industry-doesn’t have anything to do with with our deep seeded reputation of the LMC!

I heard about Jody leaving KGSR while listening to Folkways on KUT-FM with KGSR alum, Kevin Connor. Whether you love Jody or hate him, love KGSR or hate it—both Jody and 107.1 FM have had a positive effect on Austin’s musical, and even social, consciousness. Neither he nor the station did it singlehandedly, of course—but I think in a very real way KGSR, and it’s original talented staff, led the charge. In the beginning, when it might take a week before you heard a song repeated, was when the station was at its best. And the spirit of community that KGSR displayed with its many events for charitable organizations in our town—such as the Christmas Bureau—inspired many of us to not only donate funds, but to also donate our time as volunteers. To survive, you evolve, and KGSR has—for better or worse— done just that. In truth, I don’t spend much time on that end of the dial anymore, but wish them well. KUT has become my first choice for Austin radio these days as it has most of what I want in a station. Nevertheless, whether Jody chose to leave, or the choice was made for him, I thank him and KGSR for the positive impact each has had on my life.

Good luck and Godspeed Jody. KGSR is one of the things that makes Austin, Austin. I don’t think the station would work in, say, Albany, Akron, or Atlanta, just sticking to other cities that begin with an A. When I still lived on the East Coast, I listened to KGSR on the internet because it was the one station that didn’t insult your intelligence by sounding like all the others. Whoever replaces Jody has mighty big shoes to fill.

KGSR’s stuff hasn’t been that good in a while. Norah Jones, Dixie Chicks….bor-ing. There is a lot of good music out there and much of it is in our very own town. Our local musicians get NO LOVE-Except for Bob Schneider, who is in my opinion just very mediocre. I used to love when they would play old underground stuff…You’d hear that Obscure song you haven’t heard forever but loved…now that’s what makes a cool station. Now, when I turn it on it’s either a commercial, DJ’s who like to listen to themselves talk, or Norah Jones or Bob Schneider. I want them to mix it up. Play old, new, and stop talking so much. And play our local musicians, if they’re worthy. Things are not good or easy for them and they are the soul of this town.

Without a doubt, Jody is the nicest guy on the radio. Always polite, he seems almost apologetic when he tells you the tickets have already been won during the give aways. And I’ve won more than my share of tickets from Jody over the years, including two to the most recent ACL Fest.

Does this have anything to do with the recent format changes at KGSR? It seems like they are now playing tons of 90’s hits. All of a sudden Blind Melon, The Cranberries, Edie Brickel and other 90’s artist are all over KGSR. Is KGSR the new “Classic 90’s” station? I’m all for a little nostalgia but hearing “no rain” every day makes me feel like the programming being done is formulaic and lazy. Go deeper into their catalogues and bring us some new songs! I had to check my radio to make sure I wasn’t listening to BOB FM. Jody has great taste in music and hopefully someone can step in and help KGSR get out of this rut. I’ll miss you Jody.

I’m sorry to see him go. KGSR is like no other station I’ve found in my travels. But I have gotten the sense that the content has been evolving the past year or two away from what made the station great: that special Texas definition of what a great song is, and a willingness to ignore industry categories and cater to youth. Now we have new blood whose approach to music sets off a lot of my snob alarms, and seems geared toward targeting a younger audience raised on those industry categories, and form over substance. I hope I’m wrong.

I’ve been listening to Jody for 25 years, since his KLBJ days. He really changed the landscape for Austin radio and really is a musical icon. I’ve been emailing with him for the past couple of years (just music requests or to say thanks for playing a cool tune) and he always responds and is just so fricken cool. I’ve always wanted to meet him in person to just say thanks for helping shape my own musical tastes. I wish Jody the best and just want him to know how deeply he’s respected in this community.

In the late 90s, I would hear Al Green, followed by Widespread Panic, then James McMurtry on KGSR. The ratings were better then, too. You can’t convince Emmis in their bottom-line mentality that this organic/semi-local approach works. Jody, you’ve fought the good fight, sir. Hope the year off does you peacefully.

Jody, I don’t know why people are telling you good luck, you don’t need it. You didn’t get to be a giant figure in Austin communication by being lucky, it was your talent. I do hope that you stay here and my dream is that you go to KUT. With your talent and the great talent there it could once again be a channel I wouldn’t change. From the first time I heard Andy Langors voice on KGSR I wanted to change the station. I hope that it does not go to a Dallas sounding station. All musicians and radio listeners who appreciate creativity and originality in their music will miss Jody. I have been a one station listener since the days of “Critic’s Choice” on KGSR. Jody and his influence and direction were the reason that KLBJ, and then KGSR, were considered great radio stations by the group above. Clearly the station has changed (lost?) its direction during these difficult economic times and the management doesn’t have the strength to withstand the financial pressures, which is really a shame.
You can’t blame Andy for being Andy. It’s the management’s decision to move to more of a “talk” format and he’s very accomplished in that role. Its such a different approach than Jody’s always positve, supportive commentary, and many times when you heard them on air togther in was apparent. To me Jody’s strength was identifying and programming the best music. If he liked it, he played it - and if he didn’t like it, he didn’t play it. No need to talk about certain music being “bad” or other music being the latest buzz. It wasn’t about opinions or hype - just play the best music and you will have listeners. Whether they are the listeners station management has chosen to target for their advertising revenue is another question. And surely one Jody grew weary of compromising his values to answer.
Jody, we wish you happiness how ever you choose to find it. The Austin music community owes that to you. But if you could please come back soon we would really love to see the next incarnation of your vision! If not, I hope there is a new Jody out there who can take on the challenge of filling his shoes. You will receive the support of Austin musicians and music lovers, if not nationally and globally, as Jody did.

Almost immediately KGSR has turned into a run of the mill 90’s pop radio station. It’s all u2,Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20 etc from now on. I guess they are trying to appeal to the North Austin suburbanites, which would explain why 93.33 gets better reception going North on 35 than south. Yep, JT is exactly right. I was wondering why I kept hearing all these boxed 90’s tunes, which I do like sometimes, but hey, I can turn the station to Bob or 94.7 and get my fill. The unique thing about what KGSR once was, was the great music that no one else in town plays. While I sometimes changed the dial - 90% of the time, I was listening to KGSR. But now, I am finding myself bored with the selection. And seriously, what is up with that awful, canned-sounding DJ that took Jodie’s place??? And where are my 501 Blues??! Uggh!! Thanks Emmis and thanks to the northern suburbia for changing a great station into mainstream.

Love KGSR’s music style, which I believe it owes mainly to Jody. I’ve noticed music-choice changes that are not in my preferred direction since he left. First we lost KOKE, now will we lose KGSR as well?

Just heard that Jody is now headed to KUT. Does anyone still listen to KGSR? Not me. Their format change was so bad, they aren’t even on my trucks programmed buttons anymore. If there was ever a more clueless management team, I haven’t seen it. Glad to KUT making one of the first good decisions in the past year.
