Cool gig alert: Hamell, Stickpony reunion Friday

It’s been almost three years since Austin cowpunkers Stickpony have played out, but they’ll rectify that Friday at The Independent @ 501 Studios. Their old friend Hamell On Trial (who coulda started the trend of solo acts with band names) will kick things off at 8 p.m., followed by Minneapolis folk/punkers Bitter Spills at 10, then S’pony at 11:15. Blues rockers Eve and the Exiles wrap up the big sweaty gig.

Coming to the Independent, which is fast becoming an Electric Lounge Tribute Club (both co-owned by Mike Henry), on Nov. 6 are the Asylum Street Spankers, who have an incredible new gospel album called “God’s Favorite Band” out now. The Spankers just keep getting better and better- and bolder. What other band in town could open an album covering Blind Willie Johnson and the Golden Gate Quartet?

101X’s morning show hosts ‘Jason and Deb’ suspended

From Somos Austin on statesman.com:

Jason Alvarez and Deb O’Keefe, hosts of the “Jason and Deb” morning show on 101.5 FM, have been suspended for one week without pay after repeatedly using the words “wet vacs,” “in suggestive and insulting ways,” on Monday, said Scott Gillmore, Emmis Austin Radio vice president and market manager.

In the wake of the comments, all on-air employees of Emmis will be required to take cultural sensitivity and diversity training, Gillmore said.

Some listeners said they mistook the words for the slur “wetbacks.”

Fran Healy of Travis playing Austin church tomorrow

In what promises to be one of the most magical shows of the year, Travis frontman Fran Healy and Travis guitar player Andy Dunlop are playing an acoustic duo show at the Central Presbyterian Church downtown. Inspired by Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road, the show is billed “A Chronological Acoustical Journey Through The Travis Back Catalogue: Laugh Out Loud Stories, Scottish Accents, Handsome Scottish Men, Naked Torsos.”

“The show will start with the first song I wrote and end with the last song I wrote,” Healy says in promo material. “Between these two bookends we’ll play a selection of songs running in chronological order.”

Travis hasn’t broke up; one member’s wife just had a baby and the other is off racing cars as a pasttime.

Tix are still available today at $22- $25 at www.frontgatetickets.com.

Heading up to Dallas Friday? Check out Shiny Toy Guns and the Cannabinoids feat. Erykah Badu

Essentially a kickoff party for the Red River Shootout, Shiny Toy Guns (hailing from Oklahoma) and the Cannabinoids featuring Erykah Badu (hailing from Texas) play the Red Bull Sound Clash Friday at the AT&T Plaza at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

It’s being billed as a battle of the bands, fighting, not unlike sports teams, for the audience’s allegiance. One band is from Oklahoma, the other from Texas. There will be a crimson stage and a burnt orange stage. There may be a Michael Jackson tribute.

Doors at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. This show is free, but tickets are being distributed around Texas and Oklahoma.

Tickets will be given away Thursday (tomorrow) from 9 p.m. to midnight at Molotov (719 W. Sixth St.) and the Phoenix (409 Colorado St.).

There will also be given away at Breadwinner’s Restaurant in Dallas (3301 McKinney Ave.) from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday.

Publicists say there are about 1,000 tickets left for the 3,000 capacity show.
