Cool gig alert: Hamell, Stickpony reunion Friday
It’s been almost three years since Austin cowpunkers Stickpony have played out, but they’ll rectify that Friday at The Independent @ 501 Studios. Their old friend Hamell On Trial (who coulda started the trend of solo acts with band names) will kick things off at 8 p.m., followed by Minneapolis folk/punkers Bitter Spills at 10, then S’pony at 11:15. Blues rockers Eve and the Exiles wrap up the big sweaty gig.
Coming to the Independent, which is fast becoming an Electric Lounge Tribute Club (both co-owned by Mike Henry), on Nov. 6 are the Asylum Street Spankers, who have an incredible new gospel album called “God’s Favorite Band” out now. The Spankers just keep getting better and better- and bolder. What other band in town could open an album covering Blind Willie Johnson and the Golden Gate Quartet?
