Americana notes: Austin showcase barely survives Hurricane Fogerty

Last night’s Austin showcase at the American Music Association conference in Nashville had the misfortune of going up against John Fogerty’s “surprise” set in an adjoining club, so such acts as Seth Walker, Amy Cook, Asleep at the Wheel and Reckless Kelly played for smallish audiences of less than 100 in the cavernous Cannery Ballroom.

Our Blackberry-thumbing correspondent noted that the Wheel did get an attendance boost near the end when the Fogerty audience let out, but otherwise the night, co-sponsored by the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, with Austin food and beverage vendors on hand, was a bit of a bust.

Band of Heathens were one of Fogerty’s opening acts in the Mercury Lounge, so they had a big crowd, but their set was moved up an hour.

Tonight,a bunch of Austin acts, including the Belleville Outfit, the Gourds, Reckless Kelly, Flatlanders and the Wheel will play the Americana Music Awards at the Ryman Auditorium, the mother church of country music.

The night’s big Lifetime Achievement honoree is John Fogerty, who is expected to steal the thunder again. Might even force the Gourds to pull out “Gin and Juice.”.
