Format flip for Jammin’ 105.9
The Beat is back. Again.
Clear Channel’s Jammin’ 105.9 has morphed into Beat 105.9, playing round-the-clock hip-hop hits. The station is the third on the Austin radio dial to brand itself as The Beat in recent years. It will do battle with Emmis-owned Hot 93.3, which plays a similar music mix.
“We are thrilled to bring this full-fledged, music-intensive hip-hop station to the airwaves,” Clear Channel market manager Pamela McKay told Radio Ink magazine. “The lifespan of the hip-hop format has evolved to represent today’s modern radio consumer. As the makeup of Austin’s population grows in diversity, we know this mass-appeal format will super serve our growing community as well as the needs of our advertisers.”
As part of the changes, “Kidd Kraddick in the Morning” has been dropped, leaving the Dallas-based show, which airs in cities across the nation, without an Austin affiliate. “On Air with Ryan Seacrest,” another syndicated program, is still a part of the station’s afternoon lineup.

Stupidest move EVER. 105.9 had such a unique format and brought something that no other station could. I had never heard anything like it and I was so excited to find such a fun station. It made me (and tons of my friends) happy being able to hear songs that made us nostalgic that we could always sing along and dance to. Now, the new ghetto hip hop station joins about five others exactly like it. It’s a shame that Corporate America controls nearly all of the radio stations these days—it’s obvious that this move is purely based on profit.

Excuse me Kat, but there is only ONE!!!!! hip-hop station in Austin among the other hundreds of pop, country, christian, rock, alternative and every other genre of music you wanna name in Austin. We hip- hop fans need some variety. Its about time!!!!

They should just turn the station off and not broadcast anything. It’s not a real station, they are just playing programmed setlists voicetracked from who knows where. Satellite Radio is much better than any Clear Channel station. The best choice is local radio. But Clear Channel offers nothing local like a 101X, KGSR, or public radio. So between Clear Channel and Satellitte, Sirrius/XM is the clear winner.

Sorry, hg, but people in Austin have no desire to listen to a mix of really old and sorta old dreck like Drowning Pool, Korn, Golden Earring and Metallica 24/7 - and those that do use satellite radio to do so. KISS 99.5 is just as unlistenable as KLBJ-FM is for anyone with taste in modern rock music.

NICE! A guy in my gym always turns the radio to Kid Kraddick in the morning, now I don’t have to deal with that anymore….let’s pray that he doesn’t go with “Kid Kraddick wannabe Jr”, Bobby Bones….

People actually listen to the radio still? Hip hop stations usually have really poor advertising revenue, and we need two? And isn’t hip hop as an art form been dead for over 10 years anyway. I don’t think you can call auto tune “singing” hip hop, maybe it should be called computer generated talent?

Kay emailed me saying it was in the best interest of the community…. umm what adult tax paying community listens to trashy hip hop music. Look what happened to the last 2 Beat stations… they had uneducated wanna be DJ’s and ignorant listeners. Someone posted about variety…what variety?? Hip Hop is Hip Hop…there is no variety in that music. That station will die within a year like the last two!

I have been a loyal listener for 5 years to 105.9. I will never go back now, it is no different from any other station. Same old thing, they have officially ruined my morning commute haha. Oh well most of the music played is not real hip hop anyway, get educated!

I can never understand how Austin can be the “Live Music Capitol” but have the worst radio stations in the country.

XM Radio is great - until you discover that they have been making unauthorized charges to your credit card! I’ll put up with my MP3 CDs and iPOD until Austin gets real music (not commercial) stations back.

Joe Bob, Clear Channel ruined radio for everyone. They don’t use local DJs and force a generic playlist on Austin. iPods and Satellite radio are much better than Clear Channel radio. In 10 years the only radio stations left in Austin will be the local flavor ones from Emmis and public radio.

What the He— are they thinking. I tried to call the station Monday and ask them that same question but couldn’t get through. I am going through withdrawal here as are several other people I talk to. Kidd Craddock is one of the best radio programs i’ve ever listened to with the exception of maybe Howard Stern. I started out my morning first dancing, then laughing till it hurt and then sometimes crying cause it hurt. I have been going crazy not having kidd Craddock to listen to in the morning. I wil not be listening to “The Beat”, I will not support any sponsors. I’m sad, angry and sooo dissapointed not to have a class act like the Kidd Craddock show to listen to each day. Bad move 105.9, really bad move. Austin has enough Hip Hop stations, it needed a mix of talk and music in the morning. I’ve been checking out other morning stations since the change and they are BORING. I hope you’ll re-consider. Is there anything fans of the Kidd Craddock show can do to get Kidd back on the air??

that is such a shame to lose Jamin’ 105.9! it was such an energetic music station that can be heard in the office. You have made a HUGE mistake switching to hip-hop!!!!! you can seriously say that there are more people who prefer hip-hop then Jamin’ 105.9…only time will tell but sad for those who lost a fun music station, thanks a lot!

Jammin 105.9 was the best - when it FIRST came on the air with Johnny Goyen. There never has been anyone better, IMO, than him. That’s when they played true soul music - it was the only place to find anything like it, or like him, in Austin. Where is Johnny today? He was the best DJ I ever heard, and I miss him so much.

I don’t give a sh*t what kind of music they play, but I am very disappointed that Kid Kraddick is gone. In my opinion, it was the ONLY morning show worth listening to. I try to listen to Bobby Bones but it makes me cringe.

The reason this station has been boring is because it is in the middle of being sold to Aloha Station Trust, LLC as part of Clear Channel’s being bought out. Search Wikipedia for “KFMK” and you can read it for yourself.

IMHO, 105.9 (and other Austin radio outlets) were never better than when Johnny Goyen was on (about 1998-1999 until early 2000s. I had listened to Johnny in Houston earlier and was glad to find him in Austin! He always brought his own unique personality and understanding … never more so than on 9/11/2001 when he was one of the first to report and held a bunch of us together. Always good music on Johnny’s show … he had a true ear for the truly wonderful as opposed to the commercial. Miss him a lot!!!!!

I could not agree more to what Jennifer Smith wrote about KMFK and Johnny Goyen. He was one of the top DJ”s in Houston for many years. He came to Austin to kick off Jammin. He was the best DJ in the history of Jammin as well as being the best DJ in Austin. It would be great to have Johnny back on the radio.

I used to listen to Johnny Goyen when he was here in in Houston on KFMK. Johnny is the best DJ I’ve ever heard. Is he in L.A. or somewhere? Maybe he will get on satellite like Kraddock and Tesch and we will all be able to listen to him… no matter where we live. I really miss hearing him on the radio. He always played the BEST music. If he’s retired, some station should hire him immediately. I’m sure they will get instant ratings.

Thoughts on Jammin’ 105.9. In the beginning the station was “Great”..It’s true Johnny Goyen was the first DJ on the station 1998/99.He was a favorite DJ on KFMK 98FM in Houston. Johnny had A total love for Classic Soul & R&B..”Temptations” “Sam Cooke” “Aretha Franklin” “Percy Sledge” “Stevie Wonder”..Many More..I remember some of the Artists joined him live on his show in Houston. Then Johnny Goyen Came To Austin Radio to Launch Jammin’ 105.9. Not only did he play great that we loved .. Johnny reached out to EVERYONE..All Colors. Didn’t matter with Johnny. He showed love & compassion no matter who you you were. He totally knew every kind of music as well. Johnny’s Morning Show was Fun, Upbeat & at times very emotional..He was like someone I never heard before. Like a Friend .When you listened to him, you connected. Johnny knew how to “Touch Us”..That was very special. Maybe you heard him on 9/11/2001. Johnny was “One Of A Kind”.. Johnny Goyen was “REAL”…I will always remember him. Johnny Goyen had a total passion for his listener’s & MOST OF ALL….MUSIC….We Remember You Johnny…Dex

Ok all u haters the beat is one of the best hip hop stations Austin ever had with so much better dj’s than hot 93.3 I don’t see how hot 93.3 has lasted all these years. The beat is Austin’s origonal hip hop station has been booted 3 times and always returns. This proves the beat is a very popular and wanted radio station in Austin when will they learn no matter how many times the beat gets booted they’ll always return. Hot isn’t good enough to be the only hip hop station in town. All u old cronies are just gonna have to find another oldies station the beat is back for good. Hopefully we’ll here the beat’s former dj’s Lady K, Swerve, Rico and dj 2dq soon. Beat 105.9 will make it big in Austin and will put hot 93.3 in major competion. Clear channel needs to leave the beat alone this time Austin loves it’s original hip hop station thank god the beat is back.

My wife and I were weekday morning listeners to Kidd Kraddick in Austin.
I’ve sent an email requesting the show return to a radio station in the area.
Here is the contact info; send an email to kidd@kiddnation.com Subj line: Austin
For decision makers here is our stats; $200,000+ per year, 35 year old household.

Johnny Goyen was one of my best friends back in the late 80’s. We kind of lost touch over the years, but I can vouch for him being one of the most genuinely caring people I’ve ever known in my life. He’s retired and living in Austin now, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in the game again at some point. Knowing him the way I do, I wouldn’t be surprised if he reads this at some point. (Hi Gary!)

Yes, I remember Johnny Goyen as well. I listened to Johnny on many houston stations. KILT (top 40 pre-country days) KYOK 1590Am R&B..KRBE 104..Johnny was there many times. My best memories of Johnny was at KFMK Houston 98FM. He was So Real. This guy really had the talent to “Relate” to his listeners. Johnny Goyen was the most Unique Radio Personality I ever heard. I remember him well. I listened to him everyday while driving my TaxiCab around Houston. Art
