ACL shuffle: Poi Dog moves up

Poi Dog Pondering’s set time has moved from 5:45 p.m. to 3: 15 p.m. Friday Oct. 2 on the Wildflower Center stage. The only problem with the original time was that it overlapped with Thievery Corporation’s set. Two of the members of Poi Dog — Frank Orrall and John Nelson — play percussion in the T.C. touring band.

You’d think C3 would’ve known that. They manage Thievery Corporation. Here’s a list of C3’s management roster.

K’Naan has moved into the original Poi spot.

New Cross Canadian Ragweed

New Braunfels-based Cross Canadian Ragweed has a new CD, “Happiness and All the Other Things,” out today, just in time to get fans hyped for the band’s fourth annual Red Dirt Roundup on Sunday at the Fort Worth Stockyards. A crowd of upward of 15,000 is expected to hear such acts as the Wallflowers, Robert Earl Keen, Randy Rogers Band, Charlie Robison, the Gourds, Band of Heathens, Lucero and more.

The world’s loudest country band, Ragweed plays Friday at Stubb’s and Saturday at the Whitewater amphitheater in New Braunfels.

The new CCR album is the band’s best since the self-titled major label debut (known as “the purple album”), with material ranging from the Bob Seger-like opening track “51 Pieces” to the peaceful easy feeling of “Kick in the Head,” the piano-dripping “My Chances” and the tender ballad “Bluebonnets.” Singer/guitarist Cody Canada wasn’t going to record that latter tune, but when his young son Dierks asked him “Daddy, are you going to record my song?” Canada not only put it on the CD, but had Dierks introduce it.

Los Lonely Boys head to Iraq

loslonelys.jpg

Los Lonely Boys left San Angelo on Monday morning for a long-planned trip to Iraq and Kuwait to entertain the troops. (The Boys have a cousin in the Marines who was wounded in Iraq.)

“I saw them Saturday and we said our goodbyes,” said Hector Garcia, LLB drummer Ringo Garza’s father-in-law. “I think they were a little timid but very excited.” The band plans to be there for five shows over 10 days; this is the trio’s first trip to Iraq. The band’s “1969” EP is due Oct. 13. (Los Lonely Boys’ next scheduled Austin show is a free in-store Nov. 6 at Waterloo Records.)

Singer Jason Mraz, who’ll be playing Sept. 15 at the Erwin Center, has been touring the world the past year with several members of Austin funk band the Scabs, including bassist Bruce Hughes and horn players Reggie Watkins, Fernie Castillo and Carlos Sosa. The brass section, known as the Grooveline Horns, will host a homecoming blowout at Antone’s following the Mraz concert.

Grohl, Homme (and some dude from Led Zeppelin) jump on ACL Day 1

Them Crooked Vultures, the collaboration featuring Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and long-time Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, has been added to the Oct. 2 lineup for Austin City Limits Festival.

For those keeping track, the band’s spot on the XBox 360 stage is the one vacated by Lily Allen just over a week ago when the British singer dropped out for still-mysterious reasons.

If you’re unfamiliar with Them Crooked Vultures, the combo made its debut during Lollapalooza weekend last month (so the C3 Presents association shouldn’t make their addition any sort of a shocker) and earned rave reviews. The debut album, “Never Deserved The Future,” is due to the world (or this continent, anyway) on Oct. 23.

UPDATE: Looks like the band is playing an after/pre-/whatever show on Oct. 1 at Stubb’s as well. Tickets for that go on sale this Saturday.
