Yeah Yeah Yeahs replace Beastie Boys
ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been confirmed to replace the Beastie Boys Friday co-headlining at Austin City Limits this year. The New York trio replaced the, um, New York trio at Lollapalooza as well.
R&B singer Raphael Saadiq has been added to the 5:30 - 6:30 Friday slot on the Lady Bird Lake stage previously occupied by Lily Allen, while the 7:30-8:30 remains unfilled (or at least, not public). Ben Sollee is now 12:30- 1:30 Sunday on the Austin Ventures stage.
This puts the YYY’s up against Kings of Leon. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The Kings’ album “Only By the Night” has moved more than one million copies in 46 weeks (aided, of course, by “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody”). The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s newest, the New Wave-inflected “It’s Blitz!” has moved 149,000 in 22 weeks. (While “Zero” is a terrific song, it doesn’t have the radio legs of “Sex on Fire.”
Sales-wise, there’s no comparison. But on stage, the YYYs are still an absolute force of nature live and it could be thrilling to see them take command of tens of thousands.

I have seen the Yeah Yeah Yeahs before (twice now) but they have been pretty awful so far in my experience. I also feel they are not in the same realm as the Beastie Boys so having them as a substitute does not feel like a fair exchange in my opinion. This is really disappointing especially since I have paid for concert tickets, airfare, and hotel stay (as I am sure many others have) for this event. I hope it’s a better show this time but I do not plan on going near the YYY stage. I am sure some people are psyched but I am going to just have to take this as a loss. What a bummer!

I wonder why C3 can’t book any decent bands for this gig? It’s like they are scraping the bottom of the barrel for washed up bands and others that are just plain bad.
By ACL is disappointing

I’d still rather have seen the YYYs headline Fun Fun Fun Fest (not only for the alliterative acronym, but also because it’s a smaller fest with better viewing of the stages), but I’m happy regardless. Certain people prone to complain will criticize them for not being equivalent to the Beasties in terms of headliner “status” but who cares - this is a great band in peak form that will put on an even more energetic show at night, so more power to ‘em.

They’ll put on a good show, but it’s nowhere near a fair replacement! So what will be done with the extra $$$ that doesn’t go to the Beastie Boys? Someone has some fat pockets for sure!

LAME LAME LAME. I can’t believe they couldn’t (or didn’t try) to do better and get a band more “on par” with the BB.

Worst line-up??
Maybe on Friday, but overall this is a stellar lineup this year. Felice Brothers, Flogging Molly, Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper, Reverend Peyton puts on a hell of a show.
and… a little band that may be the best live band on the planet you may have heard of … Pearl Jam

Jade, unless you personally negotiated the Beastie Boys’ contract with C3 for Lolla and ACL, I’d say you have no idea whatsoever if a substantial difference in cost was involved to book the YYYs. For all we know, the Beasties still received some sort of nonrefundable downpayment that was noncontingent upon cancellation. You’re no booking agent so pipe down.

Sounds like you know why C3 had to go for a cheaper act. I hope that’s the case and not just utter greed. So what’s the excuse of bringing in Raphael “No Offense But I Don’t Know You” Saadiq for Lily Allen?

This is a slap in the face to all the people who bought tickets… Friday night is sold out so C3 has no reason to put a real act on to replace the BBs…. They should let fans get refunds… C3 continually screws ACL all the while making Llola better…. BOYCOTT C3… they suck!!!!!!!!

The show was already a sell out. Not sure what anyone expected. Wasn’t really an impetus to book anyone worth a damn. And that’s what you got.
