Beastie Boys cancel all upcoming tour dates (ACL Fest included)
Oh man. This sucks. A recently diagnosed cancerous tumor in Adam Yauch’s left parotid (salivary) gland means the Beastie Boys are canceling all tour dates and appearances for their new album, which has also been put on hold.
C3 did not have a comment Monday on what will go in that slot.
From their publicist: “Adam “MCA” Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch’s vocal chords.
Beastie Boys have canceled all upcoming concert appearances to allow time for Yauch’s surgery and recovery. The release of the band’s forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will also be pushed back.
Paraphrasing from a video statement on Beastieboys.com, Yauch said, “I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we’ll release the record and play some shows. It’s a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because i was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later.”

That stinks, but it’s MUCH more important for him to get healthy.
Maybe C3 will get a replacement, but remembering how they handled the White Stripes fiasco, that’s not very likely.
Get well soon, MCA!

This happens a lot. Blur would be great…Rob Thomas…? I know someone who says that whoever we think might be considered to replace them is far smaller than who they will pick. They’re going BIG.

It’s a bummer but but understood. There is PLENTY of time to get a replacement act, and I hope C3 doesn’t solve it the way the solved the White Stripes fiasco, as L wrote above.

I would hope they would replace Beastie Boys with another rap group…ACL doesn’t have enough hip-hop and rap to begin with!! Bring back Common! Or what about Talib Kweli?

I really hope c3 does not see this as a way to make money like they did with The White Stripes and just move some bands up. I hope they take the money they were going to have to pay the Boys and go out and get; Coldplay, John Mayer, Paul Simon, Spinal Tap, Rob Thomas, Radiohead,Jack Johnson, David Gray, or any big name band. If they do what they did a couple years ago I am done with anything that has to do with c3. They have plenty of time to book someone else.

I really wish some of you conspiracy theorists out there would get a clue and realize the difference between C3 only having ONE WEEK’S NOTICE when dealing with the sudden scuttling of the White Stripes entire tour versus the scenario that took place today. Honestly, you act as if they could get anyone to show up at their beck and call. This time should go better for us (and hopefully Adam will have a speedy, safe recovery). It’s Lolla in Chicago that has a little more to worry about this time…

Come on….WILCO!!!! And they have the slot available (Aug 28th they’re in Dublin with their next show scheduled for Oct 18th in Chicago.)
I’d also say Phish, but no way that’s happening. They and the deluge of fans that would accompany them would simply be too much for C3, the festival and Austin itself to handle at such a late date. But it would be cool to have them.

BLUR is by far the best choice to replace the Beasties. Blur and Phoenix AND The Knux all on the same day?! Heaven. I hope they do get Blur. It would make the festival.

This from mtv.com
The Beastie Boys had also been announced to headline the annual Austin City Limits festival in October, and while no replacement has been announced for them just yet, there are reports that the Kings of Leon — who were already announced as one of the fest’s headliners — were going to pull double duty, playing a second headline slot in place of the Beasties. However, a spokesperson for ACL told MTV News that those reports were false: “We have not announced a replacement for the Beastie Boys yet.”
