WOXY moving to Austin
Internet radio station WOXY is moving to Austin.
The Ohio station started in 1983 on the FM band, went off the air in 2004, and then reinvented itself as Web station dedicated to underground/independent/alternative music. Bands such as Wolf Parade, Sonic Youth and Spoon are featured, while Jack White’s new outfit the Dead Weather recently contributed two DJ sets.
“The artists and music scene brought us to Austin,” WOXY general manager Bryan Jay Miller said Thursday. “We do live sessions that we archive online and that whole series is based on whatever artists might be touring through the area. Everyone comes to Austin.”
Miller says no Austin sessions have been set up yet: “We still have to see who is coming through town.”
All three formerly Cincinnati-based WOXY DJs - program director Mike Taylor, music director Matt Shiv and DJ Joe Long - are making the move to River City.
“The plan is to be broadcasting from the new studio on Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day,” Shiv said.
WOXY’s new studios will be in the Austin Theater at 2130 South Congress Ave., currently the home of ME-TV. The two companies will share office space, video equipment and the stage. For example, WOXY will use ME-TV equipment to videotape and archive live performances.
“We’re gonna be in there with them, I’m not sure if you would call it subletting or not,” Miller said. “We’ll have our own offices and our broadcast studio, but there will be common space that we both use.”
While the 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Monday-Friday shows are live, overnight and weekend hours are preprogrammed. Many of the shows are taped elsewhere and sent in to the station.
“Are we going to change that to 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central Time? We don’t know yet, actually,” Miller said.

I grew up listening to WOXY in Northern Kentucky, when it was known as 97X. I literally remember the first time I ever heard it. The song was “Ouija Board.” by Morrissey. My life changed at that moment. I’ve continued to listen to it as an Austin transplant and am thrilled that they are coming to the ATX. I can’t imagine this station being any better, but this might just be the way. Long live WOXY!

97X BAM!! The Future of Rock-n-Roll!
For those of you here in Austin who haven’t had the pleasure, you’re about to hear what real “alternative” rock and roll radio is supposed to sound like. WOXY-FM had been hands down the coolest in modern rock radio from the time they started in 1983 until now. I spent my teenage and young adult years listening every chance I had because what they were playing was so far above and beyond what you could hope to hear on any other rock radio station. Do yourselves a favor and check ‘em out. I think they’ll be a natural fit for Austin and a big booster of the music scene here.

“97X The Future of Rock and Roll.” WOXY started in my hometown of Oxford, OH (Miami University) in 1983 in a small basement store across the hall from Horizon Records and Tapes.
The radio station started by Doug and Linda Balogh and ran by former Station Manager Steve Baker (voice of the Miami University football and basketball) was sooo unassuming. It would be criminal to overlook how important they were to helping launch the early Modern Rock era. 97X WOXY was right there along with L.A’s KROQ in introducing such bands as The Talking Heads, The Smiths, and Depeche Mode to adventurous listeners.
I am happy that WOXY will live on in Austin. I hope they restart the Modern Rock 500 up again. This is a Memorial Day staple. I’m moving to Austin later this year and I’ll be looking forward to this treat from home.

this station fills a void in austin radio. it was the only reason that i considered living in cincinnati, and now is another compelling reason to suffer through austin summers. welcome to austin, woxy, and to my 2nd decade of listening to you on the FM dial… and that woxy iphone app should do just great if i have to leave paradise.

Well, there’s no guarantee they’ll be broadcasting over terrestrial radio locally anytime soon. They are Internet-only outside an HD channel in Cincinnati. However, if you have an iPhone (or iPod touch), you can listen constantly via a free iTunes application.

Yes finally a good radio station to listen to instead of that crap 101x or FoofighterNirvana radio. The we promote concerts for bands we don’t even play on the our station radio. Its about time Austin gets a good radio station. F* Clear Channel.

Right on jjarrett! And after an e-mail exchange with WOXY general manager Bryan Jay, I’m also looking forward to the planned bbq welcome party. Cincy and N.Ky folks, don’t worry, I asked him to bring some Skyline to the shindig. Look out Austin!

I can hear the “BAM” still in my ears. Growing up around the community and making sure we only cruised on the roads where we could get good reception…….this partying gal of the 80’s still loves the online version.
