Randall “Poodie” Locke 1948- 2009

Jay Janner AMERICAN-STATESMAN
“There are no bad days” was the slogan Poodie Locke, Willie Nelson’s stage manager of 34 years, put on a sign outside his Poodie’s Hilltop beer joint in Spicewood. But Wednesday was a dark one for members of the extended Willie Nelson family as Locke died of an apparent heart attack at his home in Briarcliff, about 30 miles west of Austin. He was 60.
“He wasn’t feeling well and Shaye (Locke’s girlfriend) called for EMS at around two in the afternoon,” said Bryan Dixon, a manager at the Hilltop. “Poodie collapsed just as the ambulance got there, but they couldn’t revive him.” As news spread, Locke’s 133-capacity club quickly filled up with mourners.
“Willie loved Poodie’s exuberance,” said Casey Monahan of the Texas Music Office, who hung out with Locke Saturday at Nelson’s show at Carl’s Corner. “Willie’s whole thing is living in the moment and that was Poodie.”
In Willie’s band of gypsies, Locke was the ringleader who had a hug for everyone no matter how much else was going on. Everybody loved Poodie, the only roadie with his own logo, fan club line of barbecue sauces, but there was work to be done so both of the Nelson crew buses had signs that said “Poodie’s on the other bus.”
“He was the heart and soul of the road crew,” said Joe Nick Patoski, author of the definitive Nelson biography “An Epic Life.”
“I do not recall ever seeing him any way but calm,” said lawyer Bobby Earl Smith, who met Locke as a member of Freda and the Firedogs. “All hell would be falling around him and he just kept keeping on, slow, deliberate, getting the job done.”
Locke was a gentle giant who treated everyone special, which is why it was inevitable that, in 2002, he opened Poodie’s Hilltop Bar & Grill. It would be a place where Willie’s cronies and crew could hang out between tours, but Poodie spent many of his “off” days working on his laptop at the bar, setting up stage specifications for tours. He’d always drop everything, however, when an old friend popped in.
The Hilltop became a place where the famous, such as Willie, Merle Haggard, Garth Hudson of the Band and Big & Rich would sometimes play for hours, unannounced.
As his mother Gloria “Momma” Locke loved to say, Poodie won the Most Beautiful Baby contest in Waco when he was just a few months old. The nickname “Poodie” came from a younger sister who couldn’t pronounce “pretty” in describing her sibling.
A 12-year-old Locke met Nelson, from nearby Abbott, in Waco. Before hooking up with Willie just before “Red Headed Stranger” blew up, Locke was a roadie for B.W. Stevenson.
“Indecision may or may not be our biggest problem,” Locke quoted Willie as summing up the life of being on the road for up to 275 days a year. Although he’s met countless celebrities through the years, Poodie’s only asked for two autographs: John Wayne and Walter Cronkite.
Locke worked a Willie show at Carl’s Corner Saturday and seemed to be in good health, according to Patoski. He’s survived by his girlfriend Shaye, his sister Cindy and his mother.
You were lucky if you knew Poodie Locke, a larger-than-life folk hero who epitomized, behind the scenes, the humor and humility and edication his boss presented onstage. You can be sure there is devastation in Willie World. A member of the immediate family, Willie’s spiritual kid brother, has passed on.
There’s a little less love out on the road. But, as Poodie knew better than anyone, the road still calls.

=sigh= I might have been the last 50-something “naturalized”-Texan hippie to meet Poodie, but, from the get-go, he made me feel as though i’d been hangin’ at Poodie’s Hilltop all my life!
Speaking for the whole carolyn wonderland family, I’m sure, [if not my entire Austin music tribe]: Hey, we’re all kinda unique, … but there was only one Poodie Locke! Namaste, kind friend!

As a journalist one of the things I loved about Poodie was that he didn’t dodge phone calls and he was always forthcoming. Most people in that position, where they’re the right hand person for a superstar, would be terrified to be honest with the press, but if Willie had to cancel some shows because of exhaustion, Poodie would just say that, well, Willie’s a workaholic who books too many shows.

He had his ups and downs. We had ours related to business and friendship. He was a pretty good spirit but he proved, like so many have recently, that you can’t live like you’re 18 when you’re almost 58 forever.

Thanks, Poodie for bringing Willie and the band to so many shows, in so many corners of the country and the world, then bringing them safely back home. The things you must have seen on that bus, too bad you couldn’t tell us now. I hope you are having a cold one with Jessie, Clifford, Stevie and the rest of the real Angel Band.

Its hard to try to express 33 years of friendship and good times in a paragraph. Each day in Poodies life was like a book maybe even a fairytale. Poodie worked hard but enjoyed his job and was grateful for every second of it. I am so happy he found Shaye and visa versa. I am sorry for her loss and his mom and family and Willie and thousands of friends around the world who will never again get one of his big bear hugs.I am so thankful for a friendship that brought so much joy, laughter, music, tequila, bus sessions, hotel room parties, closin down bars, makin fun of this crazy world and enjoying LIFE to its fullest. We should all LOVE life the way Poodie did every day, The Road will never be the same, nor the bus, Funny Farm, Texas nor the world, God is lucky right now. Poodie thank you for your kindness and your goodness and your Poodieness , Your Blue eyes were like no others!! Tornadoes followed me home from New Orleans and now I know why!

Poodie was golden. He follows Willie’s lead in making everyone feel as they should….special. Poodie always took time for everyone, no matter who you were. The thing is, you are a fan of Willie just like he was and he joined you in you patronage although he was more like a baby brother to willie. although i am saddened by his passing, i am damn glad that i got to hang with such a cool dude.

I met Poodie on my first major tour opening for Willie, Waylon, Jessie Coulter and me with Tompall Glaser (with Mel Brown in the band who passed a couple of months ago) - Wanted:The Outlaws tour. He was always there with encouragement, guidance and strength and honesty about what this was all about. That was 1976 and when I moved to Austin in 2002 I played at the Hilltop with Bruton. It was as if the previous 27 years never existed. Gave me a big hug and enjoyed every minute of what I’d been up to the last nearly 30 years. He will be missed but that energy and memory lives in us all… condolences to the entire Family…

To say Poodie was a giant among men would most certainly be an understatement. He had a heart as big as Texas filled with a kindness and love that would swallow you whole. May you look down upon us from that home far beyond the skies and gaze upon that Hill Country sunset with us or as you would call it “God’s Country”. For now I can still hear you singing in my head at the end of the evening or really the beginning of the morning “Turn out the lights the party’s over.” God I miss you Baby Boy, I just wish I had the chance to say “Goodbye”. Vaya Con Dios my friend, you will be missed.

On a night off on one of our first tours we stopped in at Poodies on our way into Austin. He greeted us at the door and said “ya’ll look like a band-where are you in from?” We explained that we had just arrived from Southern California and he said “California huh, well you might know that lil sh** over in the corner-his daddy was a good friend of mine”. He pointed to Shooter Jennings and coincidently we had just played a few shows together with in California the week before. We went and said our hellos to Shooter and his band and proceeded to drink some Budweisers and play shuffleboard when Poodie came up and said “are ya’ll gonna sit there playin games or ya gonna get up and play some songs for us?” Needless to say we jumped up with a combo fo the 2 bands and ripped through some Willie and Waylon songs with Poodie and his wife in the back of the room hootin and hollerin away. He bought us some beers and told us we were welcome anytime we came through-and we took him up on his offer whenever we could… You will be missed Big Man!!!

I wish I could claim to have known him as well as so many others, but the man I had the privilege of meeting and briefly working with was refreshingly straightforward, as Michael Corcoran said, extremely professional when it came to the task at hand, and clearly had the most genuine, kind soul imaginable that just shone through. When Poodie told me he liked a band or an artist, I knew it wasn’t empty BS. And his natural hospitality and generosity made no one a stranger in his presence. He is lost to us far, far too soon. My thoughts and prayers are with his many long-time friends, his mother and family. Poodie, your spirit will live forever in the hearts of all you love you.

My good friend Mickey Lynch called from Houston to give me the bad news. His friend in New Jersey had gotten word from someone here, and he knew I’d want to know of it.
There’s alot I can’t recall, including the first time I met Poodie Locke at the Hilltop.
The last time was the night before he passed, as he made the rounds of the little dilapidated shack that serves as one of the coolest of the myriad ***** bars that grace the roadsides of the side roads of our great nation.
I got there early, since I had driven the 22 miles from town to play the Tuesday Scramble at Willie’s 9-hole terror posing as a golf course. The place was nearly empty but for the golfers straggling in from the scramble for Poodie’s free tacos. Tuesdays have been my favorite day of the week for years now… golf at Willie’s followed by free tacos or the amazing Poodieburger—and then top off the day with a few hours of great music from the talented group, The Troubadillos.
The usual crowd filtered in over the next few hours, to find Mama Locke sitting at a table near the entrance. A rare Tuesday indeed. With the beautiful and hard-working Liz behind the bar; the Troubadillos’ B.B. Morse, Ron ‘Ringo’ Erwin, Deano, and Pat McCann (sadly, sans Louie Long and Action Jackson) knocking out one classic country hit after another; Dave O. , Bill Crow and others shooting in a bar rules 8-ball tournament and the the usual few dancers, toe-tappers and an otherwise eclectic group with a common love of music, beer, weed and good times chatting with some really good folks. Doug Floyd, the mandolin player for Shake Russell (and one of my golfing buddies) was there, but he didn’t sit in with the band this night, so we hung out on the deck out back, eating our tacos and sharing our kind-bud-filtered solutions to the problems of the world with any who will sit still for 20 seconds.
This was my world on Tuesdays, created in large part by Poodie in a gravel-strewn flat spot on the side of a hill next to highway 71. I know not where his body will rest, but I’m sure his spirit will live on forever at the Hilltop.
Fair winds and following seas, my friend.

And we love you too, Poodie. When you walk into the bar in heaven, they’re all gonna jump up and shout, “Poodie!”

Poodie, you made eveyone feel special. You were internationally famous, yet you were the most down-to-earth, genuine, and beloved personality to ever grace this planet. I truly feel like something has shifted on this earth, without Poodie Locke here, to be a friend to every man. Mason and Julie have been crying their eyes out, as well as many other people. They know they have lost a true friend, and true friends are not easy to come by these days…but we will see you again, Poodie, as your wonderful soul lives on in that great chorus beyond. What’s happenin’ Big Boy? That is what I will miss hearing from Poodie. It’s the 1st thing he said, everytime I saw him. I saw Poodie Wed and Thus at Willie’s B-day party. I got my hug, and It’s funny but I thought about how much I enjoyed hugging that big ol’ Poodie. He was a friend and I remember him always being kind to people. He was just nice. I’ll miss you, Buddy.
Another thing, I don’t remeber him laughing out loud, a lot. You’d tell him a really funn y joke and he’d jut smile bigger. What a great guy.

I used to own a bar that Poodie lived at at that time of his life(the Alliance Wagon Yard) …working for B.W. Stevenson. We had t-shirts with “Where’s Poodie?” printed on the back. Everyone wanted to know, because when Poodie walked in that was when the party started. He always called me Paula Yard. I have had that name longer than any of my others. He always had a back stage pass for me, and a big bear hug and a big loud “PAULA YARD!!!”

I wrote this song in memory of Poodie:
That Very Sad Sixth Day Of May (At Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse)
I’d hitchhiked to Poodie’s to play For a fun Wednesday night open mic At Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse on the sixth day of May Was where I’d heard the news that he’d died
That was such a very sad time With the look in Brooks’ eyes which were glazed I think that he’d wanted to cry A quiet moment of remembrance we paid
CHORUS: On that very sad sixth day of May A quiet moment of remembrance we paid At the place where there’s no bad days On that very sad sixth day of May
Bridge: At the place where there’s no bad days Nobody knew exactly what to say Me, I just hitchhiked away On that very sad sixth day of May

It has been a good life for poodie, he has traved a billion miles and heard whiskey river a million times… just like Poodie, that’s about as good as it gets.. travel well my friend.. and know that you are well loved… randy jackson

A more generous uplifting down to earth friend I’ll never meet. I’ll miss his sparkling eyes Texas wit and bear hugs. Once on the way to Dallas in the back bus Poodie realized Willie’s guitar was left in Austin. He made a phone call as we were passing Waco. A bit later flashing lights of a Texas Ranger roared up behind and a bunch of motorcycles pulled up beside the bus holding a sign that said “WE HAVE WILLIE’S GUITAR”. Poodie just smiled. He never doubted. He just got the job done. Poodie always boomed my full name out whenever I came to see Willie play, no matter how much time had gone by. He made me feel special. Love to Mama and Cindi Lou and the whole Willie Family. Bless you, Poodie

It is tough losing your best friend. He was my Brother. 33 years side by side. Godfather of my kids. Nobody’s enemy.
I know it is harder for Shaye, Mama Locke, Cindy, and the rest of the Family.
My thoughts and prayers will be forever.
Rest in Peace Big Boy, you deserve it. There is not enough space for the words that you deserve. If you knew him, you know.
Now somebody else is gonna have to write the book.
You will NEVER be forgotten.
Your Best Friend Forever, Budrock

My deepest sympathy in the loss of a special guy.
I worked with Poodie many times and got to know him a little and also what he liked. We always made sure breakfast was ready and on time for him and his crew that he looked after so well. I loved working with him especially on Sunday’s during football season. I was always welcomed on his bus to catch part of the game or get an up to date score. Poodie will be in my prayers today. sid p musicfreaks/haverford, pa

Between Poodie and Momma Locke you were always guaranteed the best welcome and hospitality and always an evening to remember. I will forever miss you and your always happy, smiling and helpful personality. Willie and the music industry has lost the absolute best on this 6th day of May. You were a dear friend for as long as I can remember, way back to those BW Stevenson days, and you know you were the exact same person in the biginning as in the end. You are truely irreplacable as a stage manager, friend and human being. Thank you Momma Locke for sharing Poodie with us and my condolences to you, Shaye, Cindy, and Willie’s Family. We will all miss you dearly my friend.

I owe some of the most memorable days/nights of my adult life to Poodie. Hilltop shows, all-day twelvesomes at Pedernales, opening shows for the “old man” and several large and well-worth-it hangovers were his responsibility. We’ll love and remember you forever big boy.

Oh the memories of getting to sit on stage with Mamma at concerts. And Poodie telling me everytime I saw him “Mamma says hi”. I cherish the friends I had because of Poodie

We met the Lock family in the early 1980’s. Poodie had great family and through them we got to meet Willie who invited our band to play at Farm Aid in Austin in 1986 and his Forth of July Celebration the following year. The memories and pictures from this time are very precious to our band. None of this would have been possible without Poodie. He was a great guy.

For ten years we never left Willie without a pick. You always said, “It is our deal Baby Boy” and here or not, it always will be. Willie never went to the bathroom without us making a new pick. Hope you took a pocket full with you to pass out. It wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t, it won’t be the same without you. I love you Poodie and I will miss you greatly.

I didn’t know him well…just met him at a handful of Willie shows in England and Europe. But he was sweet, and welcoming, and always had a pass at the ready! I’ll always remember how lovely he was to my Mum, who at 78 was a little out of her depth in the world of hard livin’ country muso’s! But he made her feel really welcome and really special. That’s a great gift and rare. R.I.P. Poodie

I grew up with Randy in Waco. I am 60. We use to go to Ira’s and drink Big O’s (beer) together. Early on,Willie was working with my Uncle, Cecil Ellis, setting tile and playing with Rajek’s band. Mike Schroeder and Poodie went to work at the Marriot and met B.W. who recommended them later to Willie. I saw many shows and partied with Poodie. He was always fun to be with. Cecil Ellis’s son, my cousin, is part of the group that has the Hilltop Spicewood club. All of us will miss Poodie, throughout Texas. My condolences Cindy and Mrs. Locke, Peace, Robert “Peach”.

Just thinking about my old friend that, when they are gone and you roll thru the memories, it’s not how they were one of the best at what they did (and he was), or any of the numerous ways that a person of his stature could make you recall. For me, it was a sly little grin that he got when he slid a great one-liner right down the pipe at you, and you were still swinging at it hours later. love ya, Poodie

I was stunned to hear of Poodie’s demise. RIP. I only know him from the BAFJ show he did recently on Sirius. Listening to him and those jackasses put a warm spot in my heart, even though I’d just “met” him for the first time. He could be your best bud. I think it’s only coincidental that among his friends was Willie. Poodie would have been the same supportive and loyal friend to anyone.

My heart aches for The Family…for Shaye, for Gloria & Cindy, & for Willie & the band, & for the crew, Budrock, Kenny….ahh…I can’t imagine how this wound will ever heal….Poodie was one of a kind, impossible to duplicate, or even to come close.
I think about driving across New Zealand on the “wrong side of the road”, driving across Oklahoma in the middle of the nite on the way to horseshoe pitching in Ark, riding the bullet train in Japan, watching the horseraces from the Jockey Club (w/ the guys in jackets & ties) in Australia, & Poodie naming my grandson “Fingers Morehead” becuz of the size of his baby hands.
I’m so sad that Poodie kicked out of his traces so early, but I cannot fathom the pain & loss of The Family. My thots & prayers are with you all.

I knew Poodie in college at North Texas State. We hung out with Poodie and the rest of the GEEZLES for my freshman and sophomore year. Needless to say my grades could have been better- but it sure was fun. It puts a smile on my face to think of Poodie. The Geezles were a fraternity but definitely not your average one. I believe it was formed by Poodie as a slam on the other Greek fraternities on campus. Poodie was my on again-off again boyfirend and their will always be a place in my heart for him and always a smile on my face when I think of him. My condolences to Mom and those close to him.

Let me tell you about my meeting Poodie. I’m an actor, an African-American actor, who happened to be doing a film in Austin about ten years ago. One night Joey L. Adams said that I HAD to come to this great bar outside of downtown. This being my first time in Texas I was somewhat unsure of what to expect… because of the obvious. Upon entering I went straight to the shuffleboard table and tried to become invisible. Suddenly a booming voice shouted,”Hey didn’t you used to be on All My Children? That’s my moms favorite show.” I looked up and saw the widest, warmest smile from… Poodie and I’ve never felt so at home. RIP to one of the best.

I woke up this morning early with Poddie on my mind & you have been there all day long, I think back to the 1st of 78’ when I met you when I started to work with Waylon, I had just finished 4 years with ZZ TOP & the Rock & Roll World didn’t hold a candle to you & ***** tonk music. You started a fire that will burn for ever in country music. I have yet to meet anyone that has the life, humor, kindness, friendly down home passion to live every day to the fullest as you my friend, my brother of the road. You were there for me once when my grandmother passed away & we were in LA. I was all bumbed out but you grabbed me & said I was coming with you & away we went to the Oscar’s where Willie was playing on the show. You even give me his pass knowing he wouldn’t wear it or need it. Those are the times you really know who your friends are. I will always cherrish those special times. We both turned 60 in October, you being 4 days older than me, means I’ve got alot of catching up to do. You always said that some day “We were going to make some really fine Fossil Fuel” ……..you are the “King of the Dinosaur’s”. Momma Locke, you gave this world one fine son! My condolences go out to Momma Locke, Cindi Lou, Shaye, all of the Willie & Family band & crew. The saying goes if you say Poodie & the Pope walking together in NYC you would yell out ” Who’s that guy with Poodie” Thanks for a million great memories Big Boy! R.I.P.

Poodie!! Jack Borders was B.W. Stevenson’s road manager in the early 1970’s. Checking into a hotel during a gig in Dallas, Jack met an elevator bell man who was so funny, Jack offered the man a job on the spot as a roadie; The bellman was Poodie. Thus he joined the ‘bidness.
Boy, I love him! There are incredible Poodie’ism’s. You’d say, hey Poodie you did great son, and he’d say, “Well, even a blind hog can find an acorn every once in a while”… When something would go wrong Poodie would opine- “Well you know what Will Rogers would say” you’d lean in for the big philosphy and ask No Poodie, what would Will Rogers say? , he’d grin and say- “That *hit’le happen”
Jack Borders ((1947-1987)also one of the best, went on to be Jerry Jeff’s and Delbert McClinton’s road manager- and he was my sweetheart and we’d spend Thansgivings with Poodie, and horse around on the road with Poodie, and just be with Poodie as much as we could. And Poodie was a great friend to me when Jack passed away.
He’ll always be a part of everyone who has known him thats for dang sure. Love you so Poodie! Shari “Charlie” Leyshon
