ACL Fest 2009 lineup announced

What: The lineup for the eighth annual Austin City Limits Music Festival was released today by concert promoters C3 Presents.

Confirmed: The worst-kept secret in the Austin music scene — headliners will be Pearl Jam, the Dave Matthews Band, the Beastie Boys, Kings of Leon, Ben Harper and Relentless7 , and Thievery Corporation.

When: Oct. 2 to 4 at Zilker Park

Tickets: Three-day passes are $185 at aclfestival.com.

What you get: More than 130 artists will play the three-day shindig, including Sonic Youth, Mos Def, Flogging Molly, Lily Allen and the Decemberists. The grids: Now we wait to see who’s playing against whom and who’s headlining when.

Breaking down the lineup a little, we find:

ACL first-timers: Pearl Jam, the Dave Matthews Band, the Beastie Boys, John Legend, the Dead Weather (Jack White’s new band), the Levon Helm Band, Sonic Youth

Austin-based highlights: Ghostland Observatory, Asleep at the Wheel (every festival and counting!), the Scabs, Reckless Kelly, Black Joe Lewis, Papa Mali, Heartless Bastards, Terri Hendrix, Leatherbag, Nelo

OK, we are sick of ACLfest. The bands are all “has-beens” and sorry hipster groups with no musical talent. Enough already. Kill it!

Is it possible to have more R&B/Hip Hop bands???? Isn’t Austin a diverse city???

Who are these people and where did ACL drag them up? A quick count in the Statesman ratings shows that only 20 percent of the acts get a positive rating from readers. I think I will do what most people will do - stay home and avoid the drunken, druggie crowds.

Wow this line up is great if you are like 40!

Whatever - I will be skipping it this year.

Thats a sorry R&B/Hip Hop lineup, and the headliners are has-beens. And Austin call’s itself the live music capital? What a joke.

I would be so pumped for this lineup if it were 1994. Sadly, it is not.

Unless you’re a huge fan of the big headliners, it hardly seems worth the high ticket price. Most of the rest of these acts couldn’t even fill a small venue like Antone’s.

On the contrary— this is the best line-up yet! People complain about the bands being “has-beens”, but just because a band has achieved a certain level of success in the mainstream sector doesn’t make them irrelevant. The best thing about this line-up is that it can appeal to a wide variety of groups/genres: 90’s kids, hip hop/reggae, jam bands, young hipster types, folk, blues, etc…I don’t see much of a reason to complain.

I’m a little surprised by the negative comments. The reaction on non-Austin sites has been really positive. Lots of “you will wish you lived close to Austin”, “so much better than Lollapalooza this year,” and that type of thing. Interesting.

A true-blue, European-style open air festival is happening May 7-9 at the RP Campgrounds in Dripping Springs on May 7-9. Over 100 goth, industrial, and metal acts perform over 3 days and nights. Acts include My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, ABSU, Tungsten Coil, Hipnautica, Chant, Helstar, Impaler, and Ignitor. Go to www.myspace.com/thunderofgodsfestival for details and ticket info.

Support your underground music scene, and long live Woodshock!

While these acts are interesting they are not exactly “current.” When was the last time Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews had popular albums? Don’t get me wrong the music may still be good but it is just not popular anymore. The first few years of ACL were filled with much more contemporary artists. How do the festivals in Cali and Lolapolooza keep getting star studded acts and ACL can’t??

i didn’t think there’d be this many negative comments… just because these bands aren’t new doesn’t mean they’re not good. i don’t think people should complain about it, this lineup looks awesome imo, im definitely psyched for acl 09!!

I agree with Jen. Everybody whose complaining on this post please stay home. I’ll enjoy going to ACL Fest where people actually pay attention to the artists instead of texting on their cell phones or being to drunk to even know who is on stage.

One word. LAME! Is Ben Harper there every year, or what? Just got back from Coahella. No comparison. Thank god Austin still has SXSW!

I personally am totally happy to see that at least C3 Presents understands that people who enjoy alternative lifestyles like music also. My friends from San Francisco will be coming to town for this one. We’ll have a great time down at Oilcan’s too.

i am what one would consider a “young hipster type” and i for one am more than excited for this years line up! you dont have to be 40 to enjoy this years show, you have to know about the diverse scenes of music there are and like them, yes it’s that simple. these arent “has been” band, merely the people who listened to most of these bands grew up and out of the constant nagging for the “fave” bands to show up everywhere everytime.

Once again, ACL has the weakest lineup of any of the major festivals. I thought it was just ok, then did your rate the artists. I can’t believe how many I just want to skip. There doesn’t even seem to be any hope of finding a cool “sleeper hit” in that mess of lower tier bands. Sorry, wish it wasn’t so, but it’s the truth. This will be the last time I buy 3 day passes in advance of the lineup announcement, especially at the inflated prices. I suggest everyone boycott next year until C3 gives us the same quality they provide elsewhere. I believe they just take for granted they can sell out an overrated festival. Perhaps they use Austin to make up for paying for better talent at their other festivals. Sorry C3, but you need to hear it.

Most of you have no idea what you are talking about. This is the best lineup ever for acl, and not because of the headliners. Just because you don’t recognize the undercards and mid-levelers doesn’t mean they aren’t excellent.

What other festival can get the quality of even just the headliners? What do you people want, Plain White T’s, One Republic or some other band that will be around for maybe a year and then playing LaZonaRosa. Please stay home and listen to your current wannabie rock and hip-hop. Next thing you’ll tell me is that Kanye and Flo-Rida are better than hip-hop from the 80’s and 90’s…

The artist that are preforming at ACL this year are just more than the headliners. Remeber there are over a hundred bands. Do what I did and don’t just focus on the big names. Go on line and take a little time and research the other bands and you will see there will be so much more offered than what people are calling music for 40 year olds and if your still not satisfied stay home.

Has anyone noticed that Lily Allen has removed her Austin City Music Festival date from her website. The Ocotober appearence has also been deleted form Pollstar’s artist tour guide. What’s up with that? And why are they still advertising Lily’s only gig in the US for the rest of the year?
