Wallace Hammond 1947- 2009

Sad to hear that trombone player Wilfred Wallace Hammond, who played for Tribal Nation and, before that, Killer Bees, passed away last week. He was 62. The cause of death was not mentioned in the family’s announcement.

Hammond, who also owned a construction company, is survived by wife Beth, six children and two grandchildren.

I just heard the news today about Wallace, I am a good friend of his from Opelousas. We lost touch over 15 years. Wallace was a mentor to me. Wally Gator’s passing is nothing to be sad about except that he won’t be there for his family and friends. I say that because Wallace lived life to the fullest.

Wallace and I played in a Louisiana group known as Lil Bob and the Lollypops. The last time I spoke to him was at Antones when I played with Buckwheat Zydeco. He was a friend and I will miss him. My prayers go out to his family.

Iam Wallace’s granddaughter, Cree Hammond. Though I didnt get a chance to visit him as much because of long distance, I was always honored to say that he was a good grandfather to me. He inspired me so much to where I played trombone for my middle school, and took the seat of first chair. I was blessed with “Wallace Talent”. I miss him oh so much, and Hope he is living a better life above.
